Ackermann 1821 In-8° grande (255 x 155 mm.), pp. II, 291, (4) di annunci pubblicitari che solitamnete mancano,18 tavv. f.t. in acquatinta e colorate a mano (la diciottesima tavola, aggiunta per questa edizione, è la n. 15, "Mistakes at Cavaillon"), bella legatura di poco posteriore in piena pelle color nocciola, titolo e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso, ai piatti cornici concentriche a motivi lineari e a palmette, dentelle interna, brossura editoriale conservata all'interno. Splendido esemplare assai fresco, in barbe. Edizione originale in prima tiratura. ROWLANDSON, Thomas. Caricaturista, nato nel luglio 1756 a Londra, ivi morto il 22 aprile 1827. Dopo avere studiato nelle scuole della Royal Academy, lavorò a Parigi, circa dal 1772 al 1774. Nel 1775 espose per la prima volta alla Royal Academy un disegno di soggetto biblico e continuò negli anni successivi a esporre disegni di ritratto e di paesaggio fino al 1789. Da tale anno cessò del tutto di esporre. Rudolf Ackermann, il tipografo editore, si servì largamente del R. e nel 1812 pubblicò il famoso Tour of Dr. Syntax in search of the Picturesque, con i seguiti del 1820 e 1821, oltre a varie altre opere di carattere satirico e umoristico. Il R. disegnò e incise anche una grande quantità di caricature politiche e sociali. La sua enorme fecondità lo condusse, specie negli ultimi anni, a un certo manierismo, ma nei momenti migliori le sue composizioni di paesaggio e di figura, serie o umoristiche, hanno una qualità di linea e una distinzione di colore, che pongono il R. tra i meglio dotati disegnatori inglesi del sec. XVIII dopo il Gainsborough.‎

L'humour et l'absurdité des visites du docteur Syntax représentent la saturation de la culture pittoresque et du culte du voyage dans la Grande-Bretagne des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Le personnage fut créé par le dessinateur Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), peintre d'histoire, de portraits, aquarelliste, caricaturiste et graveur et mis en vers par l'écrivain William Combe (1742-1823), aventurier anglais, auteur principalement de vers satiriques.Publiée pour la première fois 1809, dans le magazine The Poetical de Rudolph Ackermann sous le titre The Schoolmaster's Tour, puis en 1812 sous forme de livre « à la demande générale ». Les deux autres Tournées, parurent en 1820 et 1821. Provenance : Bibliothèque Hon. John Wayland Leslie (1909-1991), avec ex-libris armorié « Grip Fast » ; Ex-libris armorié : Baldwin « Nil sine labore ».Bel exemplaire parfaitement établi vers 1850. ‎
