London: J.J. Stockdale, 1813
An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work, and has been removed from this - but was published alone (with price, printers details and colophon here). There is a touch of darkening to the outside pages. Internally clean, with the annotations as described above. This work was published anonymously, and there is no reference on Copac or in bibliographies of anonymous literature to any author. However, the name Richard Mence Esq. is written in a contemporary hand alongside the stated "Country Gentleman" This would certainly fit well. Richard Mence was a Barrister, at Middle Temple, who went on to write about the Law of Libel. He was active in writing at this time, and his dedication in the Law of Libel, was to those who oppose "Disloyal and Seditious Principles" These almost certainly included Catholic Emancipation. With his awareness of Libel laws, he was perhaps wise to remain anonymous! 49 [i]. pp
(Wikipedia).
A lovely woodcut. Undated but circa 1910. Three young ladies sitting on a boat by a lake side. One is playing the guitar, and the other two listening. Woodcut is 17cm x 20cm. Printed on fine chine papier. Paper is 48cm x 33cm. Signed by Bossert below the image. A little creasing to the paper, particularly at the edges, but overall and attractive piece. Otto Richard Bossert (18741919), also known as O. R. Bossert, was a German portrait painter, art teacher and graphic artist. Among his works are portrait etchings of historical figures and color woodcuts. His early works were influenced by Max Klinger. Bossert was born in Heidelberg and studied in Karlsruhe, before settling in Leipzig. In 1904 he began teaching at the Leipzig Academy for the Graphic Arts. In 1911 he spent a summer in Normandy and Brittany, where he was introduced to the art of Paul Cézanne. Bossert was a winner of 1914 Villa Romana prize. He died in 1919 in Leipzig. (Wikipedia). .

A very nice set of this third, revised edition of Richard Steele's seminal work. Here you find the full 271 issues of Volume 1-4 of the book edition (first printed in 1711). Each of the volumes contains and index. The fifth volume contains a further 52 issues, written by the same authors. In addition are found five additional sketches largely concerning a Dr Partridge. Full contemporary leather, with double gilt edge line to each board. A little chipping to the head and tail of some volumes. Inside, the books are in very good condition, with just a little foxing. vi, 1-336, [x]., iv, 1-376, [xii]., viii, 1-352, [xvi]., vi, [4], 1-352, [xii]., 1-324 pp. 165 by 100mm (6œ by 4 inches). "The Tatler." Founded in 1709 and printed for two years under the pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff. This is the first known such consistently adopted journalistic persona. Steele, along with Joseph Addison and with contributions by Jonathan Swift, then ended the publication at issue 271. Steele "outed" himself in the final issue. As he wrote: "The printer having informed me, that there are as many of these papers printed as will make four volumes, I am now come to the end of my ambition in this matter....." He then revealed his identity.
