In this remarkable survey Reynold Higgins discusses jewelry from the Early Bronze Age to the Late Roman era ? a period of over 3000 years ? in a detailed account of its development in the Minoan, Mycenaean, Greek, Etruscan and roman civilizations. It is a fascinating document of some of the finest achievements in craftsmanship, drawing on the historical context as well as literary and artistic sources. After a first section which explains the technical processes at the disposal of the ancient goldsmith, the jewelry itself is described, period by period. The book was first published in 1961, and this new edition has been extensively revised to to take account of recent discoveries; a large proportion of the important pieces of jewelry, drawn from museums around the world, is represented in 64 pages of plates; and a full list of sites with bibliographical references accompanies the text.
