‎Between the years 1000 and 1300, the two developing polities of Norway and Poland often followed similar trends. Yet while the histories of these two countries have long been studied along national lines, it remains rarer for them to be considered outside of their traditional geographical context, and studied via comparison with events elsewhere. This innovative volume seeks to explore the means and uses of symbolic power that were employed by religiopolitical elites in order to assert their legitimacy and dominance by taking an explicitly comparative approach and dual perspective on these two polities. What stories did elites tell themselves and others about their deservedness to rule, what spaces and objects did they utilize in order to project their elevated status, and how did struggle and rivalry form part of their societal dominance? ‎Jacob van Maerlant werd geboren in 1230 in de streek rond Brugge. Over zijn jeugd is niets bekend. Later ontmoeten we hem als koster in de Sint Pieterskerk bij Den Briele. Tien jaar verder in 1270 zien we hem terug in Damme waar hij schepenklerk zou geweest zijn. Hij stierf in 1291. Gedurende zijn leven schreef hij een omvangrijk oeuvre bij elkaar. Zo zijn onder meer bekend Alexanders Geesten, Historie van Troyen, De rijmbijbel en de Spiegel Historiaal. Der Naturen Bloeme is een complex werk waarin hij de lezer een keur biedt uit het beste wat de natuur voor ons in petto heeft. Daarbij beperkt hij zich niet tot een louter biologische natuurbeschrijving maar biedt hij ook inzicht in de rijke allegorische symboliek van de middeleeuwen die de natuur zag als het boek van Gods schepping. De lezer zal zich vaak verbazen over de wonderlijke kijk van de middeleeuwer op de hem omringende wereld. Met deze hertaling wordt voor het eerst de volledige tekst van het Middelnederlandse handschrift Der Naturen Bloeme voor het publiek beschikbaar. De vertaler vertrok vanuit de gedeeltelijke vertaling door Peter Burger. Aangezien de overgeleverde handschriften van deze middeleeuwse natuurencyclopedie zeer veel fouten bevatten heeft hij zich gebaseerd op de uitgave van Gysseling (diplomatisch) en gebruik gemaakt van de (kritische) uitgave van Verwijs. Daar er nog steeds geen recente kritische uitgave van het werk bestaat, heeft de vertaler zich vaak moeten wenden tot de brontekst van Thomas van Cantimpre in de enige uitgave van Boese. Nieuw.‎
