‎Summary Funerals were among the most extravagant princely ceremonies in Europe. At the end of the Middle Ages, they were grandiose affairs, carefully recorded, bringing together the emotions of both Court and People. The Renaissance heightened their effect, adding surprising elements borrowed from an Antiquity which was largely re-invented. The seventeenth century introduced ephemeral displays, elaborately constructed castrum doloris, dressed up with lavish facades and interior designs which transformed these sanctuaries into theatrical funeral pyres. Historians, anthropologists, and political scientists have long been interested in this subject, as can be seen from Ralph Giesey's celebrated work Le Roi est mort. Art historians have been attracted to the surviving decorations of tombs and funerary chapels. Yet historians of spectacle and of its ephemera have, hitherto, somewhat neglected a topic which is - nonetheless - at the heart of their concerns: with their elaborate settings, their costumes and decors, princely funerals challenge theatre and opera. It is within this context that experts from many disciplines attempt to trace the evolution of funeral ceremonies, which were much less static than is generally believed; to expose the gifts of the masters of these solemn occasions (and, indeed, of their predecessors, the heralds) who constantly devised subtle ways of capturing the attention of spectators and moving their emotions. These essays have tried to cover not only a wide time spectrum but also to reveal the variety and range of such ceremonies devised in diverse European Courts as well as unravelling the innovations which underlay fashions which had multiple international repercussions. ‎Création d’une nouvelle compagnie de Dragons mulâtres à Saint-Domingue. Les Dragons mulâtres étaient une milice composée de mulâtres libres ; faisant fonction de maréchaussée, elle était essentielle au maintien de l’ordre dans la colonie. Compte tenu du climat d’effervescence qui régnait alors, le gouverneur décida de créer une nouvelle compagnie. Pour cela, il envisagea de prendre des hommes dans une compagnie d’infanterie de Port-au-Prince commandée par Gaudé, mais celui-ci lui répondit négativement en évoquant la question de l’entretien des chevaux : « Il se trouvera assez de sujets […] sans qu’il soit besoin de toucher à ma compagnie d’infanterie, étant composée presque toute de sujets qui sont en ville où il n’est pas possible qu’ils puissent entretenir des chevaux très dispendieux lorsque comme icy il n’y a point de savanes communes, si quelques-uns d’eux sont forcés ou séduits par des commandants pour y entrer, il résultera que dans les temps secs ils perdront leurs chevaux […]. Il y aura une compagnie de Dragons sans Dragons ainsi qu’il est cy-devant arrivé, motif qui a par deux fois occasionné la réforme de cette compagnie, ce qui n’aurait pas lieu si on n’y incorporait que ceux qui sont habitans ou économes, seuls assurés de pouvoir entretenir des chevaux… ». Issu d’une importante famille de la noblesse provençale, Louis-Antoine de Thomassin, comte de Peynier (1731-1809) fut nommé, le 1er juillet 1789, gouverneur de la partie française de Saint-Domingue. Arrivé le mois suivant dans la colonie, il resta en fonction jusqu’à la fin de 1790, ayant à affronter une situation politique de plus en plus troublée. L’auteur de cette lettre était peut-être apparenté à Joseph Gaudé, négociant, propriétaire d’une caféterie et résidant à Port-au-Prince (source : Colons de Saint-Domingue, sur le site domingino.de).‎
