Couverture rigide en toile noire, avec un ex-libris de la bibliothèque de l'université de New York (NYU) sur la page de garde intérieure, ainsi que deux petits cachets, l'un au verso de la page de titre et l'autre au bas de la dernière page. Il s'agit du premier roman de Boer, un portrait fascinant de la vie autour de la grande Exposition universelle de Paris. Des gens de tous les pays se rencontrent, se construisent des illusions, puis disparaissent à nouveau un mélange hétéroclite de bonheur éphémère et de souffrances douloureuses. Au centre se dresse la figure de l'ancien gouverneur Weitinger, un idéaliste qui considère cette exposition comme un nouvel ordre mondial, mais qui doit admettre par la suite que son désir et son idéalisme ont échoué. C'est un livre intéressant, écrit avec fraîcheur et raconté de manière captivante. 221 pages. 210 x 160 mm‎

This is the first novel by Boer, a fascinating portrayal of life surrounding the great Paris World's Fair. People from all countries meet, build their illusions, and disappear again - a motley mix of fleeting happiness and painful suffering. At the centre stands the figure of former Governor Weitinger, an idealist who views this exhibition as if it were a new world order, yet who must admit afterwards that his desire and idealism have failed. ‎2 works in 1 volume. Large-paper copies on strong paper, of the first editions of two works on the schouwburg (theatre) of Amsterdam, the first on the old theatre, which burned down in 1772, and the second on the new theatre, which was built on the Leidseplein and finished in 1775. The large engraved plates show the exterior of the new theatre, together with the surrounding buildings and with people on the foreground, and the interior of both the theatres (the balconies and stages). Two plates depict the old theatre going up in flames and another plate shows the ruins. The text gives a history of both the theatres, including a description of the building process, the restorations and renovations, the staff, the stage equipment (lightning, decor, hoist tools, costumes, etc.), and also including a vivid description of the fire. The first work is often ascribed to Jan Fokke, but both works are also frequently ascribed to Myndert de Boer, who wrote the long poems in both works. Muller, Historieplaten 4253a & 4283a.
