This book is a comprehensive overview of four and a half thousand years of jewelry technology?from the dawn of the Bronze Age to the end of the medieval period, including chapters on design, gold refining and testing, the goldsmiths themselves and the perennial problem of fakes. It will appeal to curators, conservators, collectors, archaeologists, practicing goldsmiths and all those interested in history and crafts. The author concentrates on what can be observed without recourse to specialized laboratory equipment. About the author: Dr Jack Ogden is a British jewelry historian specializing in the study of early jewelry materials and techniques. He was born into a jewelry family and, with a keen interest in archaeology from the age of eight, it is not surprising that he began to focus on the history of jewelry by his late teens. He has examined many thousands of early gold objects over more than half a century and shared his research in several books, numerous articles, and through his worldwide teaching and lecturing. He is an elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and former president of the Society of Jewellery Historians.
