‎First Edition. Hardback. A decent, and slightly repaired copy of this set of lithographed illustrations by Nicholson. The binding has been restored with a cloth backstrip, and reinforced to the front and rear hinge inside as well. A little rubbing to the edges of the boards, with some slight chipping. Inside, the pages and plates are in very nice condition, with just a little of darkening to the text pages. 12 colour plates, title and a further 10 leaves of text, including a final leaf with a facsimile of a hand written poem by Henley. Adverts to rear. 340 by 290mm (13œ by 11œ inches). In this first edition, the bus driver only appears on the front board, not as a plate inside. Illustrations include the Guardsman, Hawker, Beef-Eater, Sandwich-Man, Coster, Lady, Bluecoat Boy, Policeman, Newsboy, Drum-Major, Flower Girl, Barmaid, each with the London location they are to be found in.‎

‎Now famous for their immediate impact of color, light, and atmospheric effect, the landscapes of Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) were at first the object of opposing critical claims: from one side the British artist was charged with painting ''pictures of nothing and very like,'' from the other, with allowing too much ''content'' to eclipse his presentation of nature. Taking this paradox as its starting point, Kathleen Nicholson's richly illustrated book proposes a thorough revision of how we understand the enigmatic artist who revolutionized landscape painting. Advancing the growing interest in Turner's handling of content, without ignoring questions of style, Nicholson shows how Turner used the themes of antiquity to explore the ways natural imagery can embody meaning, and how he came to view interpretation itself as a primary subject. Nicholson maintains that by seeking themes in ancient myth, culture, and history, Turner was able to reinvest nature with new values and concepts, thereby accomplishing a genuinely modern revision of classical landscape in an early nineteenth-century idiom. ‎First German edition of Nicholson's famous paper in which he, together with his friend Anthony Carlisle, succeeded in breaking up molecules into the constituent atoms of hydrogen and oxygen. They thus established the usefulness of the converse of the voltaic cell, by using electricity to produce chemical actions.""On March 20 of that year (1820) Volta wrote to Banks, president ofthe Royal Society, informing him of his construction of an electric battery. Nicholson heard of this and with the aid of a friend built his own Voltaic pile by May 2. It was the first in England. Nicholson's great contribution was to place wires attached to the two ends of the pile in water. He found that with the current flowing, bubbles of gaz (hydrogen and oxygen) ere given off. He had ""electolyzed"" water, breaking up the molecules into the individual elements. He thus reversed the demonstration of Cavendish, that hydrogen and oxygen could unite to form water. This was the first demonstration that an electric current could bring about a chemical reaction - the reverse of olta's demonstration that a chemical action could bring about an electrical current.""(Asimov). The Appendix contains Humphrey Davy's Bakerian Lecture on the decomposition of the fixed alkalies by electricity.Nicholson in collaboration with Anthony Carlisle constructed a voltaic pile and by this equipment they discovered the evolution of gases by the passage of the electric current through water (the decomposition of water). ‎Impressionnante tête de série bien complète des 61 premiers tomes et des 253 premiers numéros de cette importante revue pour les mouvements artistiques "Art & Crafts" et "Art Nouveau", à laquelle l'on joint la grande majorité des numéros spéciaux, soit reliés dans les tomes courants, soit proposés à part en 20 volumes complémentaires. Ce remarquable ensemble couvre toute la période depuis la création de la revue en 1893, jusqu'à mai 1914, et recueille l'édition française, qui proposait un cahier supplémentaire traduisant les articles de l'anglais vers le français (on découvre cette édition française de manière plus ou moins suivie à partir de 1899, et de manière systématique à partir du tome 44). Bon et rare ensemble provenant d'un château du sud de la France (dos un peu frottés, les dos des 4 livraisons brochées sont très usagés, 2 ff. débrochés, sans les couvertures avant le tome 44, bon exemplaire par ailleurs). Impressive, very complete series of the first 61 volumes and the first 253 issues of this important journal for the artistic movements "Art & Crafts" and "Art Nouveau", to which we join the vast majority of the special issues, either bound in the current volumes, or offered separately in 20 complementary volumes. This remarkable set covers the entire period from the creation of the review in 1893 until May 1914, and collects the French edition, which offered an additional notebook translating the articles from English into French (we can discover this French edition more or less consistently in this set, since 1899, and systematically from volume 44). Good and rare set from a castle in the south of France (spines a little rubbed, the spines of the 4 paperback issues are very used, 2 ff. unpapered, without the original wrappers before volume 44, good copy otherwise). ‎
