Superbe lithographie originale imprimée en couleurs du panorama urbain new-yorkais en 1903. John W. Reps, Views and Viewmakers of Urban America, 2772. La vue lithographiée en elle-même mesure 545 x 935 mm. Ce spectaculaire panorama représente le Lower East Side de Manhattan visible depuis la rive de Brooklyn. L’East River est traversée par le Pont de Brooklyn qui, reliant les deux rives, domine cette vue gigantesque. On y observe la skyline new-yorkaise du début du siècle, la vive activité portuaire de la ville avec de nombreux bateaux à voiles et à vapeur, le trafic automobile sur le pont suspendu et les traditionnels drapeaux américains surplombant les tours du pont de Brooklyn. Cette lithographie témoigne de l’effervescence de la métropole américaine devenue, au début du XXe siècle, la plus importante ville industrielle des Etats-Unis et le premier port mondial. Quant au Pont de Brooklyn, suspendu au dessus de l’East River, sa construction fut achevée en 1883. Elle est l’œuvre de deux hommes: un père et son fils. John A. Roebling; le père, conçut l’architecture innovatrice du pont, et à sa mort son fils Washington Roebling en finalisa la construction. A sa création, le Pont de Brooklyn était le premier pont suspendu à câbles d’acier. C’était également le plus long pont suspendu au monde, jusqu’à la construction du Williamsburg Bridge, à New York, en 1903, date de réalisation de cette lithographie. La légende au pied de l’illustration fournit des informations techniques sur le pont: largeur du pont, longueur totale de la chaussée, diamètre des câbles, etc. Il y eut un second tirage de cette lithographie en 1916, mais de taille beaucoup plus modeste (395x 586 mm). Joseph Koehler est un lithographe réputé de New York qui exerça entre 1890 et 1911. Son entreprise était spécialisée en impression de lithographies et chromolithographies. Il était également l’un des plus importants éditeurs de cartes postales et de cartes de vœux de l’époque et était reconnu pour la qualité de ses chromolithographies. Rare et exceptionnelle chromolithographie représentant une vue panoramique de la ville de New York et du Pont de Brooklyn 20 ans après sa construction.

L’exposition internationale de New-York, 1939 (New York World's fair 1939) dont le thème était "le monde de demain", fut bien plus grande que l'exposition parisienne de 1937 (160 hectares d’exposition, 120 d'attraction et 200 de parkings et de plans d'eaux) dont elle s'inspire par sa composition sur 2 axes avec une "tour Eiffel" en béton appelée Trylone flanquée d'une géode nommée périsphére. Certains pavillons étaient réalisés par de grands noms de l'architecture. L’Allemagne était absente, et durant la saison 1940 le pavillon russe fut démoli et les pavillons tchèque et polonais restèrent fermés. Très bon état d’occasion

First appearance of a milestone paper in chemistry in which Pasteur announced two momentous importent discoveries, that racemic acid could be separated into the two optically active tartaric acids and the discovery of ""mesotartaric"" acid.For his work on racemic acid and crystallography he received the prize of 1,500 francs from the Société de pharmacie (1853), membership in the Legion of Honor, and the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society (1856).""During this journey (travel to Vienna, Prag and Saxony) Pasteur met a German industrial chemist who claimed to have achieved what Pasteur then considered impossible - the chemical transformation of tartaric into racemic acid. Although he soon confirmed his belief that this particular claim was inaccurate, Pasteur unexpectedly achieved the transformation in May 1853 by heating cinchonine tartrate at 170°C. for five to six hours. This procedure also yielded a small amount of inactive ""mesotartaric"" acid, the existence of which Pasteur had predicted the year before and in search of which he had apparently undertaken the experiment. In the memoir (1 August 1853) in which he announced these two discoveries, Pasteur disclosed a new method for separating racemic acid into its left- and right- handed components. His original method, involving the manual separation of the crystals, was laborious and extremely limited in applicability. The central feature of the new method was the chemical combination of racemic acid with optically active bases. Under appropriate conditions they affected the solubility of the resulting paratartrates in such a way as to favor the crystallization of only one of the two forms that together compose the paratartrate. Although introduced by Pasteur only for the case of racemic acid, this new method clearly had wider applicability and was soon used to separate the left- and right- handed components in other ""racemic"" substances (substances inactive by compensation)."" First apperance of the papers in which Nilson describes his discovery of a new element and its properties, and naming it Scandium. It was the second new element found after Mendeleev's prediction of its existence as ""Eka-Boron"".""Mendeléeff had predicted that another element, which he called eka-boron and which he said would have an atomic weight between 40 (calcium) and 48 (titanium), would some day be revealed. It was discovered in 1879 by Lars Fredrik Nilson.... Nilson extracted 63 grams of the rare earth erbia from gadolinite and euxenite, and converted it into the nitrate. Upon decomposing this salt by heat, as Marignac had done, he obtained some very pure ytterbia and, to his great surprise, an earth that was unknown to him.Upon thoroughly investigating this new earth, he found that it contained an element whose properties concided almost exactly with those Mendeléef had predicted for ekaboron.
