‎First appearance of this paper in which Phillips summarizes his importen work on the moons surface.""In 1852 John Phillips brought maturee geological experience to his own personal observations of the physiocal features ofthe surface of the moon, using first the great telescope belonging to the Earl of Rosse...The drawings (of surfaces of the moon) were to be made under a set of standard conditions of representation and on a uniform scale...By 1853 he was recording his observations photographically on collodion palets and employing his great artuistic skill in accurate and detailled drawings...In a summary of his findings published in 1868 (the paper offered), Phillips drew vivid analogies between many of the features seen on the surfaceof the moon and those known to him intimately by observation and measurement on the earth.""(DSB X, p. 584.).‎

‎This paper represent the first observation of volcanic-like activity on the Moon, taken place the 4th, the 6th and the 7th Februar 1821. The next year it was confirmed by Olbers. ""I observed a luminous spot in the dark part of the moon, which I was inclined to ascribe to the eruption of a volcano.""(Kater).‎

‎Plaquette de présentation de la Collection Enfants Printemps/été 1978 chez Cacharel ; Stylisme JUNKO illustrée de 2 petites photos en couleurs en couvertures et de 5 photos en couleurs à doubles pages à lintérieur présentant des enfants à lintérieur dune maison, toutes de Sarah Moon.Nous joignons la MAQUETTE ORIGINALE, composée de tirages argentiques en noir et blanc, collés sur carton blanc (quelques taches et rousseurs marginales) figurant laspect de la plaquette finale. Les tirages des pages intérieures sont coupés verticalement en leur centre afin de marquer la pliure. Provenance : Claire Perrin, responsable mode aux Galeries Lafayette à lépoque. ‎

‎First printing of a main paper by the ""Father of Geophysics"" in which he shows that the effect of the tides was to force a retreat of the moon from the earth - thus going backward in time in the history of the earth, he concludes that the earth had been in contact with the moon, and this represents the time at which the whirling earth threw off a portion of its outer crust by centrifugal action, loosing angular motion in that way.""Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments, nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony, and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time.""(DSB).‎
