‎Uncommon later edition – printed in Amsterdam for the first time - of Michel de Marolles' adaptations of classical fables beautifully illustrated with 58 full-page plates by Cornelis Bloemaert after Abraham van Diepenbeeck’s design depicting scenes from classical mythology and ancient fables. The prints were of exceptional quality and became an inspiration for artists and printmakers in the following decades. “In 1655 the print collector and classicist abbé Michel de Marolles (1600–81) published a book titled Tableaux du Temple des Muses (fig. 1).1 It was a folio edition illustrated with a series of engravings of 58 wellknown myths from classical antiquity, for which he wrote detailed commentaries. The prints, most of which were designed by Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596–1675), are extraordinarily virtuosic and original for their day. Remarkably, the identity of the engraver or engravers is not known for certain. De Marolles’s publication was an international success. New editions in different languages continued appearing until well into the eighteenth century, and copies of the print series were also published. Although the engravings are still well-known, their printing history remains a little obscure. Sources relating to the patrons and artists involved are sparse. In addition, the available material has been interpreted in different ways in the past, sometimes giving rise to incorrect conclusions.” (Altena, The Tableaux du Temple des Muses) The Tableaux du Temple des Muses was protected by a 15-year privilege. ‎Scarce first edition of the first Western book about Buddhism and Buddha. ""Although the Western encounter with Asia's largest religion may be the vastest and most consequential spiritual encounter in human history, its protagonists and historical development are still barely known. Thus it comes as no surprise that even specialists have hitherto failed to appreciate the earliest Western book about Buddhism: Michel-Jean-François Ozeray's Recherches ""Sur Buddou ou Bouddou, Instituteur religieux de l'Asie Orientale"" (Paris, 1817)."" ‎Scarce first edition of this early, and perhaps the first scientific, travel expedition in Senegal - an example of a new scientific attitude and method in travel litterature. The author was primarely a botanist, and the results of the expedition was planned to be published in further volumes. Only this volume, relating to conchology and molluscs was published. ‎First apperance of this detailled report and examination by the French mathematiciens Mathieu, Chasles and Delaunay of the calculating machine invented by Martin Wiberg as an improvement on the Scheutz machine. The machine could produce tables of logarithms.""Wiberg modified the Scheutz difference engine, making it smaller and lighter, and used it to calculate a series of interest tables published in 1860. Efter improving the print mechanism of his machine, Wiberg presented it to the Academy of Sciences in Paris, which voted in 1863 to ""accorder son approbation à cette belle et ingénieuse machine"" (the paper offered). It is thought that Gerbert, disguised as an Arab, made his way into Spain and learned of the Hindu-Arabic numerals there. The Gerbert abacus was not convenient to use and was soon abandoned."" In this book he proclaimed his contempt for ""systems"" and proposed a natural classification based upon all characters rather than upon a few arbitrarily selected ones, an attempt that brought him into conflict with Linnaeus. Recent historical studies have shown that Adanson’s views were shared by many Parisian botanists and that he was responsible for the maintenance of Joseph Tournefort’s system at the Jardin du Roi until 1774, when A. L.de Jussieu’s system was adopted. Adanson owed much to Bernard de Jussieu’s plant families as they were developed in his manuscript plan for the Trianon garden in which he arranged the plants in beds in an order corresponding to his system of classification. First edition with this title, but It is really a new edition of the authors ""Institution des Sourds et Muets, par la voie des Signes méthodiques."" 1776 (Heirs of Hippocrates,920). In 1791 L'Épée's school became the Institution Nationale des Sourds Muets. ""The Abbé de L'Épée met two deaf girls, decided to educate them, and soon had a class of 60 devoted pupils, whom he supported and amongst whom he lived. From 1861 to 1869 he was the victim of one of the most clever and prolific of literary forgers, Denis Vrain-Lucas. Chasles bought thousands of manuscripts, including a correspondence between Isaac Newton, Blaise Pascal, and Robert Boyle which established that Pascal had anticipated Newton in the discovery of the law of universal gravitation. Chasles presented these letters to the Academy in 1867 and took an active part in the furor that ensued (1867-1869), vigorously defending the genuineness of the letters. In 1869 Vrain-Lucas was brought to trial and convicted. Intramuscular injection of culture caused extensive local tissue destruction, extrusion of a hemorrhagic muscle pulp, splitting of the skin, denudation of the bone, and sometimes autoamputation.
