The edges of the book-block are dyed red) (Condition: Paper slightly yellowing) (Note: The Roman historian Valerius Maximus, who lived during the reign of the emperor Tiberius, composed a manual of illustrative examples for rhetoricians, the 'Factorum ac dictorum memorabilium libri IX'. 'The subject-matter of the nine books has no clearly defined plan, but is divided under headings, mostly moral or philosophical in character (e.g. Moderation, Gratitude, Chastity, Cruelty), which are usually illustrated by Roman (domestica) and foreign (externa) examples. (...) The work is shallow, sententious, and bombastic, full of the boldest metaphor and rhetorical artifices of the Silver Age. (...) Yet the variety and convenience of the compilation ensured some measure of success in antiquity, and considerably more in the Middle Ages'. The focus often was on memorizing 'sententiae' and offering 'exempla' and anecdotes that exemplified virtues. The critical and historical approach of the Renaissance to the school curriculum eliminated most post-classical authors in favor of Cicero for rhetoric, Virgil for poetry, and Caesar, Valerius Maximus or Sallust for history, on the argument that antiquity provided the best models for understanding people and their place in society'. (The Classical Tradition, Cambr. Mass. 2010, p. 294) Not much is known about the Dutch editor of this excellent Valerius Maximus of 1726, Abraham Torrenius. From 1704 till 1717 he was praeceptor of the 'Schola Latina' at Rotterdam, and after that he became Rector of the Gymnasium of Leiden. He died there in 1739. In that year Luchtmans auctioned the 'Bibliotheca Torrentiana', of this 'dum in vivis esset, Rector Gymnasii Leidensis vigilantissimus'. He indeed was a very a sharp-eyed and stern teacher, for one of his pupils, Henricus Hoogeveen (1712-1791), who shivered in his presence, was very much afraid of the dark sarcasm of this 'Brick in the wall'. 'Alles, was er, vom frühen Morgen an bis zur Schulzeit, mit vielem Ueberdruss und der grössten Mühe gelernet hatte, gieng ihm, sobald er seinen strengen Lehrmeister zu Gesichte bekam, nicht anders als mit Zittern aus dem Munde. Daher war kein Mangel an Schelten, und (...) dadurch war sein Verstand als betäubet'. ('Das neue gelehrte Europa', Wolfenbüttel 1757, 12. Theil, caput XIX, p. 1043). Hoogeveen became later a famous Greek linguist, who earned fame with his Vigerus editions and especially his 'magnum opus', 'Doctrina particularum linguae graecae' (1769). Nevertheless, all bibliographers agree, Torrenius produced a superb Valerius Maximus edition. The notes are by the humanist scholar Justus Lipsius, 1547-1606, which were first published by Plantin in 1585. Lipsius consulted for his notes two new manuscripts. Lipsius was probably interested in Valerius Maximus as source for his own Monita et exempla politica (1605)) (Provenance: On the front flyleaf the owner's inscription: J. Piper, Gryphiae 1778. This probably is Johannes Gottfried Piper, a German Schulmann and paedagogue who studied in Greifswald. Till 1792 he was Rector at Ribnitz, a small city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He died in 1814. This is probably the German classical scholar Christoph Gottlieb Groskurd, born 1770, who died in 1834 in Stralsund. 'Ab 1790 studierte er in Göttingen bei den Professoren Gottlieb Jakob Planck, Johann Friedrich Schleusner und Johann Gottfried Eichhorn protestantische Theologie sowie bei den Professoren Christian Gottlob Heyne, Arnold Hermann Ludwig Heeren, Johann Georg Heinrich Feder, Christoph Meiners, Anton August Heinrich Lichtenstein und Splitter (klassische) Philologie. Von 1793 bis 1797 war er Kollaborator am Pädagogium in Ilfeld. Von 1797 bis 1823 unterrichtete er die Tertia am Stralsunder Gymnasium. Er trat 1823 wegen einer schweren Erkrankung in den Ruhestand und widmete sich darauf den Studien der Werke des Strabon'. Corners bumped. Part of A1 with printed title cut out and pasted on to a blank leaf that has been inserted before A2. Exlibris pasted to inside of front (Fr. Chasté & Richard Zoozmann) and back (Richard Zoozmann) board. With W.H. Riehl's ownership signature (dated Augsburg 1852) to verso of pasted-in leaf at the front and to colophon-leaf. Scattered notes and underlinings in a near-contemporary hand, otherwise clean. With Aldus' woodcut printer's device to colophon. Upper right corner (blank) of colophon-leaf restored. Zoozmann's ownership signature and various notes in different hands to verso of colophon-leaf. Title-page missing and without the four leaves (with contents etc.) from the first issue (that are sometimes present, sometimes not). 211 leaves (out of a maximum of 216: [*]4A12 B-Z8 aa-cc8). ‎

‎The rare second issue of the Aldus-edition of Valerius Maximus' 'Factorum et dictorum memorabilium libri ix'. Towards the end of 1502, Aldus received a manuscript from Johann Spiesshaymer, the addresee of the introductory letter of the second issue, containing several additional chapters of the text (four chapters of 'De neglecta religione', 'De simulata religione' and 'De auspiciis'), previously unknown to Aldus, which led him to publish a second issue less than a year after the appearance of the first. To this second issue Aldus added, in addition to the newly discovered passages, a subtitle ('Exempla quatuor et viginti nuper inventa ante caput de ominibus') and an introductory letter to Johann Spiesshaymer. The first quire (A) of the second issue is thus the only deviation from the first printing. The present copy lacks the first four leaves, i.e. the title-page, the introductory letter to Jan Lubanski and the table of contents. Valerius Maximus' 'Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings', written in the reign of Tiberius, is a collection of moral and philosophical exempla. The copy belonged to the prominent German professor and novelist Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl (1823-1897) and carries his ownership signature to verso of the first leaf. ‎Edition princeps rarissime, complète et précieuse du Valerius Maximus achevée d’imprimer en 1469 (Brunet) sur les presses de Johann Mentelin à Strasbourg. “Not after 1470” mentionnent Goff, V22 et BMC, I, 27. Hain 15773 ; Brunet, Supplément, 833. Johannes Mentelin (1410-1478) fut le premier imprimeur alsacien. En 1460, il publie son premier livre, une bible latine de 49 lignes. En 1466, ce sera la première bible en langue allemande, qui sera reprise comme modèle pour toutes les autres bibles allemandes. La Bible de Mentelin fut, jusqu’à la parution de la Bible de Luther, réimprimée treize fois dans l’espace sud-allemand. C’est au cours de l’année 1469 que Mentelin imprimera l’édition princeps des « Faits et Dits mémorables » de Valère maxime (15 av. J. C – 35 après J. C), l’une de ses rares productions non religieuses. C’est un fort beau volume de 160 feuillets, le dernier blanc, de 34 lignes à la page. L’auteur a tiré son œuvre des récits les plus célèbres d’historiens latins et grecs. Les différentes catégories représentent surtout les vices et les vertus, les institutions publiques ou privées, la religion, la patrie, la famille, etc. Catégories donc très étendues dans lesquelles il y a largement la place pour de nombreuses anecdotes, même si leur nature est très différente. Le critère moralisateur forme la base de tout choix et de toute organisation, mais interdit toute prétention historique. Le style change chaque fois que l’historien puise à une nouvelle source. Valère a, d’une façon tout extérieure, réussi à donner à son style latin une apparence de pureté et de clarté. Ce style n’est pas dépourvu d’un certain accent emphatique qui s’accorde pourtant bien avec le texte. Ce riche répertoire d’anecdotes eut très vite du succès dans les écoles grâce à sa facile maniabilité et à l’étalage commode de l’érudition d’autrui. Cette édition princeps a toujours atteint des prix fort élevés : $ 6 500 chez H.P.K en 1965, il y a 51 ans, (les prix ont été multipliés par 30 depuis lors) ; 17 Liv. 17 Sh. chez G. Hibbert à Londres en 1829 (prix très important pour l’époque) ; 870 F Or Brienne-Laire ; 630 F Or de Servais en 1808 (un livre de bibliophilie se trouvait alors à compter de 5 F Or). Précieux et beau volume, plus grand de marges que l’exemplaire du roi Georges III au B.M.C. (312 mm contre 308 mm), complet, fait rare, du feuillet blanc final qui manque à l’exemplaire de Georges III.‎

In-12 relié plein cuir estampé à motifs répétitifs en bandes verticales, personnages homme-femme en discussion sur une sorte de piédestal. Page de titre dans un bel encadrement dont la partie supérieure reprend la marque de l'imprimeur : des gousses d'aïl. Johann Knobloch (ou Knoblauch) avait son atelier au 7 rue de l'Aïl et son nom signifie également aïl en allemand. Il fut un des grands imprimeurs strasbourgeois dans le sillage de Gutemberg. Le linteau de la porte de son ancienne demeure porte cette marque, que l'ont peut encore voir et que l'on retrouve dans la partie supérieure de l'encadrement du titre. L'ouvrage imprimé en italique, est numéroté au feuillet, soit 241 + 5 feuillets non numérotés. Il est divisé en neuf livres et commence par la table des matières de chacun. La reliure est abîmée avec des manques surtout en dos, coins émoussés, le corps de l'ouvrage est en état très correct bien que présentant des brunissures. Traces de liens de fermeture. Un ex-libris presque totalement retiré, non identifiable, recouvrait une annotation du temps en page de garde. Edition peu courante. ‎

Title page with two old ex-libris in ink ( Josephis Dupin 1750 ). Rare edition. USTC 153834 (lists only one copy at Leiden University Library - March 2013).‎

Voet n° 2412B describes this edition, without however the index and the privilige leaf. Bound in contemporary full vellum, traces of ties. Small damage at the lower end of the spine but a fine copy with a near flawless interior. With a manuscript ex-libris on the title page: Ex Bib[liotheca] Mon[asterio] B.[eata] M.[aria] de Bononuntio. Aurel.[iana] Cat[alog.] 1683. The congregation of Saint-Maur re-established the Benedictine Abbey of ''Notre-Dame de Bonne-Nouvelle' in Orléans in 1653. In 1683 they took possession of new buildings, including a new library. With a 19th century printed ex-libris on the first paste down: Bibliothèque A. Kolly. Fine complete copy with an interesting provenance..‎
