SUMMARY Alabaster was a popular material in European sculpture, especially from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. Its relative availability and easy to sculpt characteristic made it a highly suitable material for both large monuments and small objects, for mass production and individual works, from England to Spain and France to the Netherlands, Germany and Poland. This material has been the subject of multidisciplinary research in various European countries for several decades. The research combines material analyses with historical and art-historical approaches. This publication, made for the occasion of the large exhibition on the theme at M Leuven opening on October 14th, brings together all renown specialists on the material and sheds light on the many facets of alabaster, such as its physical and chemical properties as well as its translucency, its whiteness, its softness, and its beautiful sheen, all of which made it a popular material used in different types of sculpture from the middle ages to the baroque, all throughout Europe, ranging from bespoke tombs, funerary monuments and commissioned sculptures and altarpieces to commercially interesting formulas such as English or Mechelen alabaster reliefs. In de traditie van het universitaire milieu wil de redactie via een huldealbum dat tegelijk een liber amicorum is Raf De Keyser bedanken voor zijn onnavolgbare inzet, niet alleen aan de Leuvense Alma Mater, maar ook daarbuiten. Rafs carriere was een duo-baan. Opgeleid binnen het Departement Geschiedenis met keuzerichting Middeleeuwen heeft hij zich ingelaten met middeleeuws onderzoek dat zich concentreerde rond de geschiedenis van Kerk, religie en cultuur. Dat zijn onderwijsopdracht binnen de opleiding tot licentiaat geschiedenis niet zo uitgebreid was, komt omdat hij ook verantwoordelijk was voor de aggregatie binnen geschiedenis. Deze aanvankelijk binnen universitaire middens wat verwaarloosde lerarenopleiding heeft Raf een volledig nieuwe, stevige en maatschappelijk verantwoorde onderbouw en invulling gegeven. Niet alleen heeft hij hierin een belangrijke onderwijstaak op zich genomen, die hem doorheen het ganse Vlaamse Land bracht, maar ook heeft hij hieromtrent belangwekkend onderzoek verricht en laten uitvoeren. In vele redacties en organisaties binnen Vlaanderen maar ook op internationaal vlak die maar iets met geschiedenisonderwijs te maken hadden, was hij een bezielende kracht en dikwijls ook de initiatiefnemer. Niet te verwonderen dat Raf de eerste voorzitter werd van het Facultair Centrum voor Aggregatie van de Letterenfaculteit en van de algemene Leuvense Organisatie voor de Lerarenopleiding. Raf volgde van nabij de nieuwe ontwikkelingen in het onderwijs. De nieuwe media kregen van hem dan ook veel aandacht. Hieruit groeide een van zijn laatste grote initiatieven, namelijk het Maerlantcentrum, dat een bevattelijke digitale ontsluiting van historische informatie nastreeft. Zijn inzet, dienstvaardigheid, jovialiteit en kunde werden dan ook door iedereen die met hem mocht samenwerken ten volle geapprecieerd zodat het de redactie weinig moeite kostte om collega's en vrienden binnen de twee disciplines te vinden die bereid waren aan dit liber amicorum mee te werken. Maar liefst 47 bijdragen werden verzameld, waarvan 23 voor het luik middeleeuwse geschiedenis en 19 voor het aspect geschiedenis en didactiek. De rubriek 'Middeleeuwen' legt voornamelijk de klemtoon op religie, Kerk en cultuur. Maar men vindt er ook bijdragen over geneeskunde, filosofie, chronologie, literatuur, recht, kunst en historiografie in terug. Voor het luik aggregatie wordt niet alleen het hedendaagse geschiedenis-onderwijs bevraagd, maar zitten er ook enkele bijdragen tussen die reflecteren over geschiedenis-onderwijs in het verleden. ‎

‎An edited volume reflecting upon the transnational mobility of sculptors and its implications for the artists and their art during the long nineteenth century. This volume analyses the international mobility of sculptors and their work in the nineteenth century. The creation of nation-states at that time coincided with an increasingly international outlook shared by artists, their commissioners, sellers, buyers and critics. Sculptors were encouraged to study abroad, and were recognized for their experience and success overseas. As they were very much dependent on commissions, they had to travel to provide for their revenues. While abroad, they were nonetheless expected to represent their nation and showcase their e essays in this collection reflect upon the theoretical and practical implications of the many aspects of transnationality, travel and (cultural) mobility for nineteenth-century sculptors, their work and their careers, by addressing the role of, among others, education, execution, commissions, exhibitions, art criticism and the art market. The main focus is on French, Belgian and Italian sculptors and their works but other countries are represented too, and well-known as well as lesser-known sculptors, through general articles and case studies. Tom Verschaffel is professor in cultural history at KU Leuven. His research concerns the intellectual and cultural history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and more specifically the history of historical writing, the popular representation of history and cultural nationalism, the history of cultural infrastructure and of cultural transfers.
