‎"BOHR, NIELS AND F. KALCKAR. - THE LIQUID DROP MODEL OF BOHR INTRODUCED.‎

Reference : 48816

(1937)

‎On the Transmutation of Atomic Nuclei by Impact of Material Particles. I. General theoretical Remarks. (all published)‎

‎Copenhagen, Levin & Munksgaard,1937. 8vo. Uncut in orig. printed wrappers. In: ""Det KGL. Danske Videnskabernes Selskab. Mathematisk-fysiske Meddelelser. XIV,10"". 40 pp. Fine and clean.‎

‎First edition of the work in which Bohr introduced his famous Liquid Drop Model of the atom in order to interprete the nuclear structure. (The paper was not continued as Kalckar died the following year).""It had, of course, been clear to Bohr that analogies with atomic spectra could not be of help in interpreting his (earlier) picture of nuclear structure. Peripheral electrons, thinly spread within the atomic volume, can be compared to a dilute gas of particles interacting in pairs only. By contrast Bohr's picture of intranuclear motions of tightly bound nucleons should show 'essential collective aspects', he said. Now, together with Kalckar, he suggested that for nuclei a much more proper comparison would be with a drop of liquid. That analogy should not be taken too literally, the dynamics of a true liquid drop is vastly different from thta of nucleai. Yet the comparison, treated cautiously, was tempting and in the event proved fruitful in many respects, particularly in regard to collective motions.""(Pais ""Niels Bohr's Times"", pp. 339-40).""In the liquid drop model, formulated by Niels Bohr, the nucleons are imagined to interact strongly with each other, like the molecules in a drop of liquid. A given nucleon collides frequently with other nucleons in the nuclear interior, its mean free path as it moves about being substantially less than the nuclear radius. This constant ""jiggling around"" reminds us of the thermal agitation of the molecules in a drop of liquid. The liquid drop model permits us to correlate many facts about nuclear masses and binding energies"" it is useful in explaining nuclear fission. It also provides a useful model for understanding a large class of nuclear reactions."" (FAQ).Rosenfeld No 56.‎

‎"RUTHERFORD, E. (ERNEST). - THE SATURNIAN MODEL OF THE ATOM.‎

Reference : 45087

(1904)

‎Zur Kenntnis der Atomenergie, eine Beziehung zwischen kinetischer Theorie und Radioaktivität.‎

‎(Leipzig, S. Hirzel), 1904. Without wrappers. In: ""Jahrbuch der Radioaktivität und Elektronik"", 1. Bd., heft 2. Pp. 103-214 (entire issue offered). Rutherford's paper: pp. 103-127‎

‎First appearance of the paper in which Rutherford set forth his early - before 1911-model - model of the atom, the so-calles Saturnian Model. Rutherford pictured here the radioactive atom as a giant whirligig of electrons and alpha-particles, whose stability is somewhat disturbed, perhaps as a result uncompensated radiation losses, precipitating the expulsion of some of its constituents with the tremendous speeds they possessed befiore the explosion.‎

(1918)

‎Zur Quantentheorie der Spektrallinien. (+) Fortzetzung. (2 Parts).‎

‎(Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1918). Without wrappers in ""Annalen der Physik"", Vierte Folge, Bd. 51, No.17 a. 18. The entire issues offered. Pp. 1-124 a. pp. 125-236. Sommerfeld's papers: pp. 1-94 a. pp. 125-167. Punched in inner margins after cords. Clean and fine.‎

‎First appearance of Sommerfeld's main contribution to Quantum Theory, incorporating the ""Sommerfeld Model"" of the atom and his creation of a general theory of spectral lines based on quantum concepts.""In the winter Semester 1914/15 his topic was the Bohr model. He extended it considerably and was able to find a number of new results which were published early in 1916 (in the paper offered). The gist of Bohr's theory was the fact that it allowed only certain electron orbits. Sommerfeld tried to find the ""quantum conditions"" by which these orbits could be singled out from the classically allowed ones.""(Siegmund Brandt ""The harvest of a Century"", Episode 27, p. 110 ff.).""This extraordinary extension, enrichment, and precision of Bohr's theory by Sommerfeld contributed decisively to its rapid and widespread acceptance. Only five years after Bohr's first publicatuion Sommerfeld, recognizing that the mathematical development of thsi quantum-theoretical atomic model had reached a conclusion of sorts, undertook a comprehensive exposition of the field. His ""Atombau und Spektrallinien"", of which the first edition appeared late in 1919, immediately became the bible of atomic physics and its successive editions, appearing almost annually in the early 1920's, chronicled the progress of this field up to the eve of quantum mechanics.""(DSB XII, p. 529).The offered papers contains also 2 importent contribution in the same field by Sommerfeld's pupils: Paul S. Epstein ""Zur Quantentheorie"" pp. 168-188 and J. Stark: ""Der Träger der Haupt- un Nebenserien der Alkalien, alkalischen Erden und des Heliums"", pp. 220-236.‎

‎"GAMOW, G. [GEORGE]. - GAMOW'S ATOMIC MODEL.‎

Reference : 45999

(1928)

‎Zur Quantentheorie des Atomkernes. Mit 5 Abbildungen.‎

‎Berlin, Julius Springer, 1928. Without wrappers. In ""Zeifschrift für Physik, 51 Band., Dritte und Viertes Heft. Titlepage to Bd. 51. Pp. 165-308.(Entire issue offered). Gamov's paper: pp. 204-12., textillustr. A stamp on titlepage.‎

‎First printing of Gamow's first major contribution to physics, his theory of alpha-decay.By 1928, George Gamow had solved the theory of the alpha decay via tunneling. The alpha particle is trapped in a ""potential well"" by the nucleus. In classic physics, it is forbidden to escape, but according to the then newly discovered principles of quantum mechanics, it has a tiny (but non-zero) probability of ""tunneling"" through the barrier and appearing on the other side to escape the nucleus. Gamow solved a model potential for the nucleus and derived from first principles a relationship between the half-life of the decay, and the energy of the emission. Alpha particles were first described in the investigations of radioactivity by Ernest Rutherford in 1899.""One of the first applications of quantum tunneling was by the physicist George Gamow in 1928, soon after the development of quantum mechanics. Alpha particles, which consist of two protons and two neutrons, are emitted by some nuclei. For example, ordinary uranium, 238U, with a lifetime of 4.5 billion years, decays by emitting an alpha particle. For decades alpha decay had presented a problem: the emitted alpha particles seemed to have too little energy to get out of the nucleus. The Coulomb barrier arises from the combined effect of the Coulomb repulsion between the alpha particle and the nucleus (both positively charged) and the nuclear force that attracts the two particles. The energy of the emitted alpha particle is less than the top of this barrier. Classically, the particle would be unable to get out of the nucleus, but it obviously does.Gamow suggested that alpha particles tunnel through the barrier. If so, the half-life of the decay should depend on the width and height of the barrier, and it does: the lower and thinner the barrier, the greater the chance of penetrating it. As the alpha particle's energy increases, the particle sees both a lower and thinner barrier so the probability of getting through increases extremely rapidly. For example, the energies of the alphas emitted by 232Th and 212Po are 4.05 MeV and 8.95 MeV, respectively, while their respective half-lives are 14 billion years and 0.3 millionth of a second. Thus, a factor of about two in energy produces a difference in half-lives of sixteen orders of magnitude (that is, sixteen powers of ten)!"" ‎"BOHR, N. (NIELS). - THE ATOMIC MODEL AND THE ""STATIONARY STATE""‎

Reference : 47170

(1915)

‎On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom. (+) On the Decrease of velocity of Swiftly Moving Electrified Particles passing through Matter. (2 papers).‎

‎London, Taylor & Francis, 1915. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt, title- and tomelabels with gilt lettering. Spine a bit rubbed, some cracking to hinges, but covers not detached. In: ""The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science"", Vol. XXX, Sixth Series. VIII,824 pp., textillustr. and 18 plates. (Entire volume offered). Bohr's papers: pp. 394-413 and pp. 581-612. A stamp to verso of titlepage. Internally clean and fine.‎

‎First appearance of a landmark paper in which Bohr found experimental support for his energy equation for electron orbits and of stationary states in the work of Franck and Hertz from 1914. Furthermore, Franck and Hertz unwittingly provided an independent confirmation of the concept of stationary state. In 1914 they observed an energy threshold in the electron-stopping power of mercury vapor. This threshold, Bohr explained the following year, corresponded to a transition between the normal state and another (first excited) stationary state of the mercury atom (and not, as Franck and Hertz had originally thought, to the ionization of the atom). The supramechanical stability implied by the assumption of stationary states was now empirically proved to comprehend stability with regard to electron impacts.""Bohr had to frequently revise and refine his atomic model in light of new discoveries. One significant paper ""On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom,"" (the paper offered) added more specific details about atomic states. For example Bohr had earlier made the argument that electrons could jump from one orbit to another as energy was emitted or absorbed. In this paper, he theorezed that an atom possesses stationary states in which energy was neither emitted nor absorbed. Any emission or absorption that did occur, such as might induce an electron ump, would correspond to the transition between two stationary states.""(sparknotes.com).An: the second paper offered. When Bohr had finished his importent paper on the hydrogen atom ""On the Theory of Decrease of Velocity of Moving Electrified Particles on passing through Matter"" 1913, he completed another paper on that subject (the paper offered), which includes the influence of effects due to relativity and to straggling (that is, the fluctuations in energy and in range of individual particles).(Pais p. 128).Rosenfeld no 13 a. 14.The volume contains further importent papers by J.J. THOMSON, W.H. BRAGG, RUTHERFORD & BARNES, SODDY & HITCHINS etc.‎
