The Environs est le principal ouvrage de Daniel Lysons (1762-1834), qui a dessiné lui-même la plupart des illustrations "The whole forms a work of permenant value; the arrangement is clear and the style interesting; while the copious extracts from the parochial registers, though occasionally inaccurate, are useful to the biographer and genealogist" (Oxford DNB).
