Cet archipel lointain et mystérieux, plus ou moins localisé depuis 1515, est très vite identifié à<br> la Cipango du récit de Marco Polo (c. 1300), représenté sur le globe de Behaim (1492). Aussitôt les Portugais y introduisent les armes à feu et nouent de fructueux liens<br> commerciaux. En 1549, François Xavier et quelques jésuites débarquent à leur tour et fondent la mission chrétienne du Japon, pays dont ils seront deux ans durant les premiers<br> explorateurs. Un riche cahier cartographique retrace l’historique de la représentation de l’archipel, d’abord sous la forme de la mythique Cipango, de 1459 à 1571, puis du Japon nouvellement découvert, de sa première apparition en 1550 jusqu’à sa forme presque définitive au début du XVIIe siècle, en passant par ses multiples avatars.</p><p></p><p>Le livre rassemble ensuite les évocations de Cipango dans les sources historiques occidentales depuis 1300, puis du Japon dans les récits narrant la rencontre entre les<br> Européens et Japonais de 1543 à 1552. Ces textes, écrits par des navigateurs, des aventuriers ou des jésuites témoignent de la fascination des Européens – non sans incompréhension – devant cette nouvelle civilisation, qu’ils jugent aussitôt supérieure à toutes celles qu’ils ont découvertes jusqu’alors. Library stamps on volume one reads: ''Cochinchine, service de santé, pharmacien en chef'', and also it is written through the title: ''Bibliothèque de la Pharmacie''. Library stamps on volume two also but very faint. So apparently this copy went to Vietnam and returned to Europe. There are several old annotations in the text. Last third of the text of volume one with a waterstain, and volume two also with waterstain mostly marginal. Should be rebound, but otherwise a complete copy of the scarce second edition (''Denuo in Germania edita cum notis Caroli Ludovici Willdenow'').‎

On the first paste down a small ticket from ''Ching-Foong '' Printing and Bookbinding Office, Szechuen Road Shangai. Rare copy of the original first Anglo-Chinese centennial calender. According to Cordier (Vol. I , col. 568) only 500 copies of this book were printed and most were destroyed during a fire in 1873 at the printing house '' Chin-Foong ''..‎
