Plantin] 1585 [12] + 252 + [8] + 188 + [8] + 48 + [22] + [8bl.] pp. , with engraved printer's device (on all three title pages), ornamental initials, 33x22cm., full-leather binding (original covers and ends rubbed and discoloured, professionally re-backed), two unidentified heraldic ex-libris tipped-in, two ancient manuscript ex-libris on title page ("Timoleon Grangis (?), iii Jan 1588" & "Ex libris Adriani Augustini de Lamet doctoris & socij Sorbonis" = Adrien-Augustin de Bussy de Lamet, 1621-1691), paper is browned but text is always well readable, few ancient text underlinings, text in Latin, [First folio edition of the collected works by Tacitus with commentaries and notes by Justus Lipsius. The first Lipsius edition of Tacitus was published in 1574 by Plantin, but this 1585-edition uses new manuscripts found in Spain and Germany, now lost, and an incunable of Venice ca. 1470. Baudrier, VII-226-227 (les 8 pp. d'index font partie des feuillets liminaires, ici ils sont à la fin. Philologue et humaniste allemand, il suivit les cours de droit de l'illustre Marc-Antoine Muret à Rome, puis revint à Louvain pour y enseigner et voyagea. Converti au lutheranisme, il enseigna à Iena puis Leyde où il abandonna la confession d'Augsbourg pour la religion réformée.Mêlé aux polémiques soulevées par son ouvrage sur la religion unique et la répression des sectaires, il se retira de Hollande, envoya sa démission de l'Université de Leyde et se convertit publiquement au catholicisme et, malgré des offres brillantes qui affluaient de toute l'Europe, il choisit l'Université de Louvain.Sa correspondance, qui était fort étendue et qui concerne de nombreux savants de l'époque, présente un vif intérêt. Le siège du Conseil de l'Union Européenne à Bruxelles porte son nom. Deux minuscules cernes à quelques feuillets et brunissure en haut du second plat de reliure, sinon bel exemplaire en bonne reliure d'époque.

Title with copper engraved vignet showing the statue of the Virgin Mary. Bound in contemporary full vellum. Endpapers renewed, fine copy. No provenance indication.This is the first edition in Dutch of the translation of Lipsius' Latin text which appeared at the Moretus Press in Antwerp in 1604 (Bowen Lipsius HAL 40). This item is described by Bowen as Lipsius HAL 18. The pivelige of Velpius is dated 4 april 1604 (Cambrai) ; 28 january 1604 (Papal privilege)."

Anvers, Plantin, Moretus, 1599, in-4, 218-[5] pp. [sign. : A-Z4 a-e4], Vélin souple de l'époque, Deuxième édition revue, corrigée et augmentée de ce beau traité de poliorcétique, dont l'originale a paru chez le même imprimeur en 1596. Elle a été tiré à 1500 exemplaires. L'ouvrage est illustré de 37 belles gravures dans le texte, dont 23 à pleine page, représentant divers sièges de villes, les tactiques et machines d'assaut, attribuées à Pierre Van der Borcht. C'est le second traité d'art militaire rédigé par le philosophe Juste Lipse (1547-1606), à la suite du De militia romana (1595), dans lequel l'auteur soulignait la nécessité de mettre sur pied une armée bien organisée et disciplinée, sur le modèle de l'armée romaine. L'auteur le rédige sous forme de dialogues auxquels il participe avec Jean Furius, un archiprêtre, Jacques Carondelet, un chancelier, Pierre Oranus, un jurisconsulte conseiller du prince-évêque de Liège et Dominique Lampsonius, humaniste et historien de l'art. Les réflexions militaires de Lipse on joué un rôle non négligeable dans la réforme des armées du prince de Nassau. Exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque de Robert Ferguson, avec son étiquette armoriée "Ferguson of Raith" sur le contreplat supérieur : il figure à la page 38 du catalogue de sa bibliothèque.* En regard, sur la première garde blanche : bel ex-libris calligraphié, daté de 1709, de "Johannes Chapman eius Liber". En dessous : ex-libris manuscrit de 1770 de "Johannes Joes (?) de Yarmouth Norfolk"; le même est répété en tête de la page de titre. Bel exemplaire, en reliure du temps. Both works in the first illustrated edition. The work deals with the combats of gladiators and shows their weapons and equipments in combat scenes. The second work deals with Roman amphiteaters, particularly the Colloseum.
