Philologue et humaniste allemand, il suivit les cours de droit de l'illustre Marc-Antoine Muret à Rome, puis revint à Louvain pour y enseigner et voyagea. Converti au lutheranisme, il enseigna à Iena puis Leyde où il abandonna la confession d'Augsbourg pour la religion réformée.Mêlé aux polémiques soulevées par son ouvrage sur la religion unique et la répression des sectaires, il se retira de Hollande, envoya sa démission de l'Université de Leyde et se convertit publiquement au catholicisme et, malgré des offres brillantes qui affluaient de toute l'Europe, il choisit l'Université de Louvain.Sa correspondance, qui était fort étendue et qui concerne de nombreux savants de l'époque, présente un vif intérêt. Le siège du Conseil de l'Union Européenne à Bruxelles porte son nom. Deux minuscules cernes à quelques feuillets et brunissure en haut du second plat de reliure, sinon bel exemplaire en bonne reliure d'époque.

No provenance indication.This is the first edition in Dutch of the translation of Lipsius' Latin text which appeared at the Moretus Press in Antwerp in 1604 (Bowen Lipsius HAL 40). This item is described by Bowen as Lipsius HAL 18. The pivelige of Velpius is dated 4 april 1604 (Cambrai) ; 28 january 1604 (Papal privilege)."

Light browning to title-page and faint scattered brownspots. Second work: 98 pp. Text to part one complete, but missing the 2 Index-leves. With 2 folded engraved plates (Colloseum, exterior and interior, both cut close and strenghtened on verso). Light yellowing to leaves.
Both works in the first illustrated edition. The work deals with the combats of gladiators and shows their weapons and equipments in combat scenes. The second work deals with Roman amphiteaters, particularly the Colloseum.

The folding plates in the 4th work with some false creases. Generally the 4 titles are in good condition. The binding is very finely preserved. There are no provenance indications. Fine collection of 4 works by Lipsius. Apart from the 1st work which was already published in 1593 and which deals with mostly classical history ; the 3 other titles date from the end of Lipsius' career and pertain to the near local history of the region of his birth.."

The great humanist returned to the Roman Catholic belief, leaving the protestant North, and now devoting his time and art to the spread of the news of the miracles of the Holy Virgin in his beloved Brabant. As a real Fleming he finally went back to his ancestral hearth.
