Apres la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Belgique a ete marquee par une tradition du meuble social moderne, sous l'influence du design americain, italien et scandinave. Une esthetique industrielle a emerge des le milieu des annees 50 avec les premieres expositions d'industrial design et l'Expo 58. Le Design Centre (1964-1986) a marque les deux decennies suivantes en organisant des expositions sur des themes aussi varies que le mobilier, l'eclairage, le graphisme, le design pour les enfants, le verre, le textile, le plastique, les accessoires de bureau, le design et l'exportation, etc. La decouverte de ses archives a permis de combler la recherche sur cette periode et confirme le role preponderant de sa directrice Josine des Cressonnieres. L'engouement pour le design industriel reapparait dans les annees 90 par le biais des createurs eux-memes, des ecoles, du VIZO et d'une multitude d'initiatives privees. La Belgique est une terre de creativite sur la scene internationale. Using the format of a geographical atlas, the aim of this educational tool is to develop the interest of the public for contemporary art and to initiate dialogue between this art and other disciplines such as sciences, sociology, politics, etc. The book combines series of colour plates giving numerous historical, thematic and iconographic viewpoints with instructive texts - a mosaic of texts that take their inspiration from numerous quotes by artists, scientist and intellectuals, as well as encyclopaedia definitions, art reviews and short biographies. This English bilingual atlas, an initiative of the publishing section of the Museum of Contemporary Arts of Grand-Hornu (MAC's), compiled by Denis Gielen and with a preface by Laurent Busine, will be available in bookshops in spring 2007. One of the goals of any author of an atlas is probably - on occasions - to survey the world in order to better explore it, whether he or she is a geographer, historian, hiker, philosopher, amateur or art collector. Seeing, naming and discerning the ways of the world is just as imperative as seeking to define their meanings: some are diverse and unpredictable, others are manifold and disordered. This appears to be particularly true of contemporary art, in the sense that it confronts us with statements about a world to which we belong in the same way as the artist, in other words in a non-finite time. This book presents an alternation of illustrations, texts and synopses whose images and imaginative concepts all refer to one other. It is open to a multiplicity of inter-pretations, inviting confrontations and the discovery of similarities, relationships and analogies between works of art and various subjects of thought. To take stock of the field of contemporary art is to understand the movements and currents of which it is formed, but it also involves exploring the paths that interweave among them. Denis Gielen compiles facts, stories, art works and intentions, abiding by laws which, although they may not be universal, are nevertheless able to serve as our guide as we - author and reader - roam together along the meandering paths of creation, following the trails which unite the works and visions of our contemporaries. Thought and emotion carve out a sinuous and curious path here, even though this book is in principle open to the pursuit of all kinds of journeys. The Atlas of Contemporary Art can therefore be used by everyone, for it rejects no one. New book.

Even more than literature, it is the vernacular that has inspired the American artist Tony Oursler. Since the late 1970s, Oursler has forcefully turned the medium of video back on the dominant culture at large, through the use of technologies such as television and film. Oursler's response to mass media's conformist narratives and paranoid discourse - beginning with his first grotesque videos up until his more recent phantasmagorical installations - is to oppose their unhinged scenarios and psychotic ramblings. Even when using media that is primarily visual, Tony Oursler has always taken particular care with the words he places in the mouth or mind of his characters. His poetic writing - which also takes on psychoanalysis and religion - has set this American artist apart as one of the most interesting and powerful writers of his generation. This volume is the first work exclusively dedicated to Tony Oursler's poetic texts. It brings together fifty full transcriptions of video works created between 1977 and 2013, presented in their creative context and accompanied by an extensively illustrated scholarly analysis. Composed by the artist himself as a bouquet in which language explodes into a spectrum of colours and registers. Vox Vernacular provides us with an authentic anthology of his work. Laurent Busine is director of MAC's, working in collaboration with Denis Gielen. 'Ik ben Rops, deugdzaam zijn kan ik niet en hypocriet wil ik niet'. Dit credo zal de Belgische fin-desi clekunstenaar F licien Rops zijn leven lang huldigen. Zijn tekeningen, gravures en illustraties weerspiegelen zijn vrije levensstijl en creatieve geest. Deze uitgave werd opgevat als een monografische catalogus waarin verschillende bijdragen werden verzameld die het resultaat zijn van 10 jaar onderzoek in het Museum F licien Rops (Namen), vooral op basis van de lijvige briefwisseling van de kunstenaar. De verschillende artikelen belichten de vele facetten van de 'Inf me F ly', die sommigen onder ons nog steeds beschouwen als een van de grootste pornografen van de negentiende eeuw. Deze monografie laat ons in de eerste plaats kennis maken met een kunstenaar die zich op heel wat manieren onderscheidde en een gans netwerk van artistieke en literaire relaties uitbouwde tussen Brussel en Parijs.
