Biologie, astronomie, médecine, histoire : la science chinoise a connu très tôt un développement considérable, dont Joseph Needham dresse ici l’inventaire. S’y ajoute une masse de découvertes techniques (boussole, étrier, poudre à canon, etc.) qui, transmises à l’Europe, ont produit un véritable bouleversement. Pourquoi cette tradition scientifique chinoise a-t-elle été si longtemps ignorée en Occident ? Pourquoi n’a-t-elle pas abouti au développement d’une civilisation plus technologique ? Autant de questions essentielles qui impliquent un radical changement de perspective sur l’histoire des sciences en général. — Joseph Needham (1900-1995) est devenu le spécialiste mondial de l’histoire des sciences et des techniques chinoises, discipline qu’il a érigée en domaine d’études à part entière. La publication de son œuvre majeure, “Science and Civilisation in China”, commencée en 1954, a mobilisé, et mobilise toujours, les meilleurs chercheurs et historiens de la Chine.

Peu de travaux auront, dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, autant renouvelé notre vision de la civilisation chinoise que ceux menés à Cambridge par Joseph Needham et son équipe. La gigantesque somme Science and Civilisation in China, dont dix-sept volumes ont déjà paru, aborde en effet l'histoire et la culture de la Chine par le biais, jusqu'alors inexploité, des sciences et des techniques : histoire de l'hydraulique ou des textiles, de l'alchimie ou de la botanique, des machines de guerre ou des mathématiques...
