Front board to volume two is cracked to the hinge, but still holding in place. Handled but attractive. Frontis portrait to volume one. (clean and tidy) The title page tp volume one is a little darkened with a corner mark, otherwise the text block is in excellent condition. Volume two is still in very good condition, but with a few foxing spots. A little worm damage to the last few pages of volume 2. with slight impact upon text. Unpaginated quarto edition. Also enclosed are a copy of Canon John Willis's address to the Johnson Society "Dr Johnson and his English Dictionary" 1948 24pp. And an advertising postcard from Scolar Press for a facsimile of the Journey to the Western Isles. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8Ÿ inches).‎

‎First UK edition. A lovely association copy (of sorts). From the library of Lord Harold Davies of Leek, with a tipped in TLS from Sir Harold Wilson to Lord Leek. The letter is a single sheet, on House of Commons note paper, and refers to his studying Cabinet memoranda during the summer recess of 1978. The book itself, in original blue and red dust wrapper. Red cloth with gilt titles. In addition to the letter from Wilson, there is the ownership signature of Rt Hon Lord Davis of Leek PC to the ffep. There are also some interesting marginalia, some are just penciled ticks or references, others more significant. For example he contradicts an American statement by Johnson with the comment "This was known when I went to Hanoi" Lord Leek was a Labour MP, and Wilson's PPS, who undertook a peace mission to Vietnam at Wilson's behest. His "secret" mission was revealed before he arrived, to the fury of the Americans, and led to him being ignored by Ho Chi Minh. His mission is referenced in this book p581. Dust wrapper is good, a little rubbed and some closed tears internally taped. Now held in an archival sleeve. The book is in very good condition. 24 x 16.5cm. 630 pages.‎

‎First printing of Averch and Johnson's seminal paper in which they introduced in what was to become known as the ""Averch-Johnson effect"". The paper was one of the most cited and influential papers in microeconmocs during the 60ies. ""The Averch-Johnson effect is produced when fair rate of return regulation encourages a firm to invest more than is consistent with the minimization of its costs. This can happen when the allowed rate of return exceeds the cost of capital, since the difference between the two represents pure profit. Detailed descriptions of actual regulatory processes may be useful in suggesting guides for action, since actual outcomes depend as much on political and bureaucratic necessity as they do on economic analysis and 'rational' benefit-cost estimates."" (The New Palgrave).""Averch and Johnson's famous paper from the early 1960s asks the simple question: If we assume that regulation acts to instantaneously adjust prices so as to maintain a constant target return on a firm's capital stock, what incentives does the firm have to choose an efficient combination of inputs? Averch and Johnson show, using fairly straightforward maths, that if the regulator sets the regulatory rate of return above the firm's true cost of capital, the regulated firm has an incentive to choose too much capital relative to labour - that is, there will be an inefficient capital-labour ratio. This observation sparked off a large empirical and theoretical literature exploring what came to be known as the 'Averch-Johnson' or 'A-J' effect.The Averch-Johnson model assumed an extreme form of what is known as 'rate of return' or 'cost of service' regulation in which prices are continuously and rapidly adjusted so as to yield the desired return on capital stock. In reality, rate of return regulation as it was historically practiced in the US always involved an element of 'regulatory lag' - that is, a period of time before prices were adjusted to reflect changes in costs. This regulatory lag gives rise to some desirable incentives, as discussed furtherbelow. Even in 1962 it was recognised that allowing higher ex post rates of return was necessary to induce desirable incentives. Averch and Johnson note: ""We have been told by representatives in both the industry and in regulatory agencies that justification exists for allowing a return in excess of cost to give firms an incentive to develop and adopt cost-saving techniques. If the firm is left only indifferent as among a wide range of activities it has no positive incentive to minimize costs for any given activity.""Averch and Johnson's paper was, for a while at least, very widely cited, often incorrectly. The A-J effect later came to be synonymous with 'gold-plating' and with general inefficiency of the regulated firm. But these ideas cannot be strictly attributed to Averch and Johnson. Averch and Johnson only highlighted a potential tendency towards an inefficient mix of capital and labour - but they made no mention of the tendency to simply spend too much on all inputs - so-called 'x-inefficiency' as discussed further below."" The first volume is devoted to the history of printing and includes biographies, adorned with bibliographical notes, of famous British printers such as Caxton and Wynkyn the Worde. The second volume describes type, composition, letter cases, imposition (including rather unusual formats such as 72mo, 96mo and even "one hundred and twenty-eights"!), exotic alphabets, rules to be observed in a printing house, the construction of a printing press, warehouse work, wages, steam machines, etc. X, [14], xii, 609, [11]; [8], iv, 663, [17] pp. 125 x 75 mm (5 x 3 inches). Espiritu Santo est une île située dans l’archipel du Vanuatu (Nouvelles-Hébrides) ; elle en est la plus grande par sa superficie et a pour capitale Luganville. Située au sud d’Espiritu Santo, Malekula (anciennement Mallicolo) est la deuxième plus grande île du Vanuatu. Célèbres pour leur étui pénien de grande taille, les Big Nambas ont longtemps été considérés par la littérature coloniale comme l’un des peuples les plus sauvages et les plus cannibales de l’archipel. Ils doivent cette réputation au facteur d’isolement géographique (le plateau de Malekula est difficile d’accès, la côte inhospitalière, les cocotiers n’y poussent pas et l’eau y est rare), et à leur longue résistance au christianisme et à l’administration (source : Francis Bryard, 2012, sur le site academia.edu). Cinéaste et voyageur américain, Martin Elmer Johnson (1884-1937) se rendit une première fois aux Nouvelles-Hébrides en 1908, lors du voyage qu’il effectua avec Jack London à bord du Snark où il servait comme cuisinier. Marié en 1910 à Osa Leighty, il retourna aux Hébrides en 1917 pour y réaliser des films documentaires. Il s’installa à Vao, chez le mariste Prin et, de là, se rendit à Malekula, chez les Big Nambas, où il rencontra le chef Nagapata. Il en ramena un film intitulé Cannibals of the South Seas. En 1919, il fit un nouveau voyage aux Nouvelles-Hébrides. Dans les années 1920, il entreprit des expéditions en Afrique de l’Est puis, dans les années 1930, en Indonésie. Il mourut dans un accident d’aviation aux Etats-Unis. Au cours de ses voyages, il était toujours accompagné de son épouse Osa (1894-1953). Sur son séjour aux Nouvelles-Hébrides, il publia un livre intitulé Cannibal-Land, Adventures with a camera in the New Hebrides (Boston, 1922). Très bon état de conservation.
