‎Rare exemplaire de la traduction française de "Illustrations of the Huttonian theory of the earth" publié en 1802 par John Playfair , et de "A comparative view of the Huttonian and Neptunian systems of geology", de M. Murray. James Hutton avait publié son grand ouvrage "Theory of the Earth, with proofs and illustrations" en 1795 ; l'un des pères de la géologie moderne, partisan du plutonisme, il montra notamment l'origine intrusive du granite. Les explications claires de son disciple John Playfair et son ouvrage, soutenu par Charles Lyell (l'ami de Charles Darwin) jouèrent un grand rôle dans la diffusion de ses idées. John Murray (1778-1820) expose dans son ouvrage les systèmes Huttoniens et Neptuniens, sur la formation des roches, et conclut en faveur de cette dernière. Etat satisfaisant (manque le premier plat, cachet à froid d'ex-libris, fente en dos) pour cet exemplaire peu commun méritant d'être établi dans une reliure de qualité.‎

Bound in full Russia leather, both covers with gilt fillets, all edges gilt, with a marbled paper slipcase. Slipcase and binding worn and soiled, spine with some loss of leather and faded gilt lettering, some offsetting of the portrait frontispiece on the title page. Apart from these defects still a reasonably good copy, printed on strong paper. With the ex-libris on the first paste-down of Tom. Cerutti. From the library of John Murray, M.D. at Newcastle, with his silhouet portrait on the second fly leaf, and with an extensive ex-dono note by his heir Mary Harrison, dated Jan. 9th 1834 to Murray's friend William Boyd..‎
