Johannes Kahrs haalt beelden uit de voortrazende vloed van de gedrukte media, de reclamewereld of de film, laat die beelden stilstaan en schept zo een ander tijdsverloop. Vaak verwijzen de sc nes en motieven die Kahrs gebruikt naar traumatische of pijnlijke gebeurtenissen. De kunstenaar vervalt nochtans niet in een realistische illustratie van allerlei gruwelen. Hij is ge nteresseerd in wat voorafgaat aan of wat volgt op de expliciete afbeelding van geweld, uitspattingen, shock, bedreiging of tragiek. In 1997 stelde Johannes Kahrs ( 1965, Berlijn - woont in Berlijn) al tentoon in de Vereniging voor het Museum (VMHK). Hij bracht er een totaalinstallatie met een schilderij, posters, geluidsband en zorgde voor de volledige inkleding van de ruimte. Het museum nam de hele installatie op in de verzameling. Omdat het in feite om een uitgebreid in situ werk ging, werd tot nu toe uit het ensemble enkel het schilderij 93?09" opgesteld. De bron die aan het schilderij ten grondslag ligt, is een still uit de film Taxidriver van Martin Scorcese waarop Robert de Niro te zien is. De uitkomst is de afbeelding van een ge soleerd filmbeeld dat zinderend in de projector wacht op de volgende sc ne. Kahrs haalt beelden uit de voortrazende vloed van het collectieve beeldarchief, de gedrukte media, de reclamewereld of de film, laat die beelden stilstaan en schept zo een ander tijdsverloop. Hij maakt daarbij geen gebruik van herhalingen van beelden, strekt de beeldsequentie ook niet uit in de tijd, maar beklemtoont louter de tegenstelling tussen het statische en bewegende beeld. Tot die laatste groep behoren ook afbeeldingen uit de reclamewereld of uit de dagbladpers: voor Kahrs is beweging geen eigenschap die te maken heeft met de vorm van de afbeelding, maar wel met de vraag of de afbeelding meegesleurd wordt door de stroom van de massadistributie. Vaak verwijzen de sc nes en motieven die Kahrs gebruikt naar traumatische of pijnlijke gebeurtenissen. De kunstenaar vervalt nochtans niet in een realistische illustratie van gruwelen. Hij is ge nteresseerd in wat voorafgaat aan of wat volgt op de expliciete afbeelding van geweld, uitspattingen, shock, bedreiging of tragiek. De ?tussentijd?, dwz. het interval dat ontstaat door het onderbreken of stopzetten van de stroom van dramatische momenten, vormt Kahrs? favoriete beeldruimte. In ?Mann ungef hr 14x gek sst? (1994) bijvoorbeeld is het gezicht een ongedefinieerd vlak dat uit louter rode sporen bestaat, als van lippenstift. Bij de filmstills die Kahrs als model gebruikt, kennen we de erbij horende handeling. Het valt de toeschouwer niet moeilijk de afgebeelde sc ne in verband te brengen met het daaropvolgende drama dat zich zal afspelen. Kahrs maakt handig gebruik van de kennis die het publiek heeft om de afbeelding in te passen in een verhaal. Tussen de afbeelding en de toeschouwer komt een band tot stand, doordat men de concrete voorstelling verbindt met de diffuse filmbeelden die in de herinnering zijn opgeslagen. Of, sterker nog, de toeschouwer reconstrueert de afgebeelde situatie met behulp van de herinnering aan andere beelden. Het afzonderlijke filmbeeld dat als model gebruikt is, kan men zich echter onmogelijk als een ge soleerd beeld herinneren: hebben we echt Mick Jagger op die manier koffie zien drinken in Godards film? In samenwerking met de Frac des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, en de Kunstverein M nchen presenteert het S.M.A.K. nu de tentoonstelling A - h. Deze tentoonstelling maakt het voor het eerst mogelijk om kennis te maken met het geheel van de uiteenlopende media en beeldformaten die Kahrs hanteert. A - h toont de expressief-obsessieve vervormingen van lichamen, de schematische en contrastrijke houtskooltekeningen, de fragmentarisch-narratieve klank- en video-installaties en de libidineus-controversi le sculpturen van gewelduitbarstingen. Alle werken zijn gemaakt in de periode 1992-2001.

Johannes Kahrs was born 1965 in Bremen, Germany. He lives and works in Berlin. Kahrs takes a photo, a video projection or a film still as the starting point of his drawings and oil paintings. He catches fragments of images of politics, show biz, and advertising to reform, re-interpret, and further fictionalize the represented idea by shifting tones and gradations of grey and black pastel, leaving contours blurred. As he experiments with the original from of the image, he detaches the picture from its original meaning. Hence, he finishes with an almost unrecognisable representation and completely new recording of reality.
