"Ceux qui s'intéressent à la situation religieuse en URSS avaient à leur disposition jusqu'à maintenant deux excellents ouvrages en français : celui de Nikita Struve : Les chrétiens en URSS (Seuil, 1963) et celui, plus récent, d'André Martin : Les croyants en URSS (Fayard, 1970). Le livre de W. Fletcher les complète en mettant particulièrement en relief la vie religieuse clandestine à l'écart de l'Eglise orthodoxe officielle. Il apporte ainsi une contribution très importante à la connaissance d'un phénomène mal connu et sur lequel les Soviétiques tout autant que les étrangers ont des idées assez vagues. Fletcher procède méthodiquement et prudemment, avec un souci évident de rigueur et d'impartialité. Il a rassemblé un grand nombre de renseignements et de témoignages de toutes parts. Il montre clairement comment la clandestinité a été la conséquence directe de la politique du gouvernement soviétique, dont il retrace les différentes étapes, depuis la Révolution jusqu'à nos jours (tentatives pour diviser l'Eglise orthodoxe en incarcérant massivement ses prêtres et en inspirant le mouvement de l' « Eglise vivante » pendant les années 20, persécution brutale et destruction des structures de l'Eglise pendant la décennie suivante, malgré l'acte d'allégeance du Métropolite Serge en 1927, qui déchira les fidèles et en poussa un grand nombre dans la clandestinité ; puis, après une période de tolérance inaugurée par la guerre, consolidée en 1943 et qui dura grosso modo jusqu'à la mort de Staline, reprise de la lutte antireligieuse avec une violence accrue qui se poursuit de nos jours (fermeture massive d'églises, de séminaires et de monastères, internements fréquents de croyants dans des camps ou des hôpitaux psychiatriques, etc.)... Cet ouvrage sur l'Eglise clandestine en Union Soviétique est beaucoup plus qu'une étude sérieuse et objective d'histoire et de sociologie religieuse. Elle nous fait mieux sentir le courage indomptable de ceux qui luttent dans l'ombre en risquant tout pour que ne leur soit pas arrachée la racine de leur vie, leur foi en Dieu."
