Giuseppe Viola Zanini (1575-1631), né à Vincence et mort à Padoue, fut un peintre et un architecte qui travailla dans les environs de Venise. Il fut davantage un peintre de décor, renommé pour tel, qu'un architecte actif, l'architecture l'intéressant comme moyen d'expression du décor peint. L'ouvrage est divisé en deux parties, la première partie s'intéressant aux origines de l'architecture et aux éléments qui la composent, ainsi que de la façon dont on doit construire, le second livre est lui entièrement dévolu aux cinq ordres.
