William Fryer Harvey (1885-1937) était un écrivain anglais réputé pour ses nouvelles dans les genres macabre, horreur et mystère. Né dans une riche famille quaker à Leeds, dans le Yorkshire (Royaume-Uni), il a fait ses études dans des écoles quakers et au Balliol College d'Oxford. Fryer Harvey a ensuite obtenu un diplôme de médecine à Leeds, mais sa mauvaise santé l'a empêché de pratiquer pleinement la médecine, ce qui l'a conduit à se concentrer sur l'écriture. 243 pages. 180 x 125 mm

Gilt title and decoration to front board.Cloth at spine has started to split and appears to have been neatly repaired. Some foxing internally but overall in good condition. William Fryer Harvey (18851937), was an English writer renowned for his short stories in the macabre, horror, and mystery genres. Born into a wealthy Quaker family in Leeds, Yorkshire (UK) where he was educated at Quaker schools and Balliol College, Oxford. Fryer Harvey would later earned a medical degree from Leeds, but due to ill health was prevented from practising medicine fully, leading him to focus on writing. 243 pages. 180 x 125 mm (7 x 5 inches). .

Édition reprenant l'édition de 1654, chez le même éditeur, de cet ouvrage fondamental de la médecine. Dès 1616, alors qu'il enseigne l'anatomie et la chirurgie au Collège royal de médecine de Londres, Harvey professe ses recherches sur la circulation sanguine. Il ne présente ses découvertes par une publication qu'en en 1628. Cet ouvrage prouve non seulement la circulation sanguine mais la vulgarise et la met à portée d'un public large. Il devient un incontournable de la littérature médicale et connaît de nombreuses rééditions. Le présent ouvrage est orné d'un titre-frontispice gravé représentant le Temps menant la Vérité qui est daté de 1661 ainsi que deux planches à pleine page et dans le texte (pp. 126-127). À partir de le page 173, on trouve les Exercitationes Anatomicae duae De Circulatione Sanguinis en réponse à Jean Riolan fils. Ce médecin et doyen de la Faculté de Paris avait réfuté la théorie d'Harvey dans son Opuscula anatomica nova (1649). C'est le seul médecin auquel Harvey prendra la peine de répondre. Le traité de Jacobus de Back, Dissertatio de Corde est intégré à l'ouvrage en soutien de l'avis d'Harvey. Il possède sa propre pagination, sa page de titre, et ses tables de chapitres et de matières. Summary This volume explores attempts at the popularization of philosophy and natural science in medieval Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Medieval philosophers usually wrote their philosophical books for philosophers, so the desire to convey psychological, cosmological, metaphysical, or even physical teachings to the 'vulgus' may seem surprising. This disdain for the multitude and their weak intellectual capabilities is expressed most clearly in the medieval Islamic and Jewish Aristotelian traditions of philosophy, but is certainly found among the Scholastics as well. Yet philosophy was taught to non-philosophers and via a variety of literary genres. Indeed, scholars have argued that philosophy most influenced medieval society through popular forms of transmission. Among the questions this volume addresses are the following: Which philosophers or theologians sought to direct their philosophical writings to the many? For what purposes did they seek to popularize philosophy? Was the goal to teach philosophical truths? Were certain teachings not transmitted? Which teachings were transmitted most often? For whom exactly were these popularized texts written? Were the authors of popularized philosophy always aware they were writing for non-philosophers? How did they go about teaching philosophy to a wide audience? How successful were these attempts? In what ways did popularized philosophy impact upon society? To what extent were the considerations and problems in the medieval popularization of philosophy the same or different in the various religious traditions of philosophy? How philosophical was the popularized philosophy? Plaisant exemplaire en maroquin relié en ne comprenant que le texte de William Harvey (la page de titre annonce la dissertatio de corde de Jacob de Back qui ne se trouve pas dans cet exemplaire), complet de son frontispice et de ses deux célèbres planches.
Véritable tournant dans l’histoire de la médecine, la découverte de la circulation sanguine par William Harvey en 1628 a ouvert la voie à une nouvelle science, celle de la cardiologie. Cette quatrième édition, est particulièrement importante car destinée à divulguer auprès du plus grand nombre cette découverte majeure. Le format portatif Elzévirien convenant particulièrement à cette fonction. Important et rare dans cette condition.
