‎Par Charles Callahan Perkins (1823-1886). — “Les Sculpteurs italiens”, avec les nombreuses planches qui accompagnent le texte et que M. Perkins a gravées lui-même, ne laissent rien à désirer du côté de l'authenticité historique et de l'exactitude des informations. Il n'y aurait par conséquent nulle exagération à dire qu'un pareil livre a épuisé le sujet, si la part des aperçus critiques n'y était parfois trop étroitement mesurée, et l'analyse des doctrines un peu sacrifiée à la chronologie ou à la nomenclature. Pourquoi ces abstentions ou ces scrupules? On a d'autant mieux le droit de les regretter que, lorsqu'il arrive à l'auteur des “Sculpteurs italiens” de se départir de sa réserve habituelle, il prouve que chez lui le goût est aussi sûr que l'érudition est solide. Le chapitre entre autres qu'il a consacré à Donatello et les jugements en général qu'il porte sur les chefs-d'œuvre de l'école florentine montrent bien qu'il sait, quand il le veut, rattacher les conséquences aux principes et dégager le sens secret des choses. (...) Dans un des chapitres les plus intéressans de son livre, M. Perkins, par la production ou le rapprochement de certaines dates et de certains témoignages, est arrivé à peu près à établir que Verrocchio était mort non seulement avant que sa statue de Bartolomeo Coleoni – la plus belle figure équestre d'ailleurs qu'aient produite les temps modernes, – fût coulée en bronze, mais même avant que le modèle eût été mis en état de subir cette opération dernière... ‎In 1949 the photographer and co-founder of Magnum Photos, George Rodger, learned of the Nuba tribe while traveling in the Kordofan region of the Sudan. Remarkably, he was granted permission by the Sudanese government to take pictures of these striking people, who lived as their ancestors had centuries before. After publication in National Geographic magazine, these pictures-as well as Rodger's fascinating journal entries from the shoot-have not been available to the wider public.
