8vo. LIV,(4),1072 p. Half calf. 21 cm Still a standard edition (Ref: Hoffmann 2,172; Graesse 3,146; Ebert 8866; Brunet 2,1723: 'excellente édition qui a effacé la précédente') (Details: Lacking the 7 plates. Back ruled gilt and with a gilt black letterpiece. Edges dyed red. Excellent paper) (Condition: Binding scuffed, head of the spine slightly damaged. Small library stamp on the verso of the title, even smaller 'dyplum' (double) stamp on the last page) (Note: This edition of 1811 still is the standard edition of Gregorius Corinthius' 'De dialectis' (Peri dialektôn). (Gregorius Corinthius, 1092-1156 fl.) His 'De dialectis', enjoyed great popularity in Byzantine times, which is proved by its preservation in numerous manuscripts. It 'is founded partly on Tryphon (cent. 1 B.C.) and Joannes Philoponus (cent. 4 A.D.), on scholia and glossaries to Pindar, Aristophanes and especially Theocritus, and probably also on the author's independent reading of Herodotus, as well as Pindar and Theocritus. It aims at completeness but is defective in arrangement'. (Sandys 1,424) Works like this 'De dialectis' were considered by 18th century scholars to be of great use for the understanding of textual problems and for the amending of texts of classical authors, and for gaining a profound knowledge of the Greek language and its vocabulary. This 1811 edition opens with 2 'praefationes', one of the previous editor of Gregorius Corinthius, the Dutch scholar Gisbertus Koen (1766), the other of Godofredus Henricus Schaefer. Besides 'De dialectis' this edition contains also a number of short anonymous Greek/Byzantine works on Greek dialects, among which a short one, 'libellus de vocum passionibus' (excerpta e codice Parisino num. 2662) attributed here to Manuel Moschopulus, fl. 1295-1316. The work is further equipped with Friedrich Jakob Bast's (Bastius, 1771-1811) valuable palaeographic treatise (commentatio palaeographica) on 'De dialectis' (p. 701-938), and with lots of notes and excellent indices. Bast 'Commentatio Palaeographica' is considered the next contribution of note to palaeography after Montfaucon's 'Palaeographia Graeca' of 1708. The editor of this 'De dialectis' edition of 1811 is the German scholar Gottfried Heinrich Schaefer, 1764-1840, who was a man of wide learning, especially in the province of Greek prose. He is best known for his edition of Demosthenes with his commentary and 'Apparatus criticus'. (Sandys 3, p.102)) (Provenance: The stamp and removal stamp are of 'Bibliothek zu Heidelberg') (Collation: *-3*8, 4*4 (between leaf 4*1 and 4*2 have been inserted erroneously by the binder the last 2 leaves (p. 1071/72 and the very last leaf with the text: 'typis Caroli Tauchnitzii') signed 3Y. A second mistake was the insertion in this gathering 4* of an unsigned leaf, with the text: 'Pars posterior, appendicem ad Gregorium Corinthium complectens', a leaf which should have been bound before page 701, at the beginning of the second part); A-3X8 (minus blank leaf 3X8) (Gathering 3Y2 ended up erroneously in the preliminary pages)) (Photographs on request)

Summary The volume with a joint introductory chapter is in the first part devoted to Humanists publishing in the circle of the university of Leipzig at the turn of the 15th century: Paulus Niavis / Schneevogel (ca. 1453-1517) and Ioannes Honorius Cubitensis (ca. 1465-1504). The second part includes the translation work of ?eho? Hrub of Jelen (ca. 1460-1514), mostly preserved in manuscript, the first translation from Ancient Greek into Czech by V clav P seck (ca. 1482-1511), and a remarkable edition of Martianus Capella's work De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii prepared by Ioannes Dubravius (ca. 1486-1553). The volume covers a relatively short period beginning in 1488, when the editions of Niavis and Honorius are first documented in Leipzig, and ending with 1516, when Dubravius's edition of Martianus Capella was published in Vienna.
