‎This book offers an architectural report of the metamorphosis that the Vooruit art center has known during the last ten years. Spurred on by a growing need for the arts center to physically adapt and make new connections with its surroundings and its users, the iconic monument underwent a transformation from a cultural home to an urban platform. The book further elaborates on the vision of the architect and how he wants to build on this art and architecture treasure from the past in a unique and challenging way. The social importance and responsibilities of the arts center in the city are deepened in a debate, in which sustainability and greening are also given a place. In addition, art in the public space becomes an important theme in the publication. Three artists give their reflection on the new architecture through interviews. Their artworks are a lasting witness. In the first part, architecture reviewer Christoph Grafe elaborates on the social and architectural importance of the transformation. ‎Voor veel inwoners van de stad Antwerpen is Linkeroever onbekend terrein. Vanaf de oevers van de Schelde ziet de overkant van de rivier eruit als een verzameling hoge gebouwen, zwevend boven een groene strook. Hoewel herinneringen aan zomeravonden op het Sint-Annastrand deel uitmaken van het collectieve geheugen van de stad, wordt Linkeroever vaak over het hoofd gezien en vergeten. Het is 'aan de andere kant van de rivier' - een deel van de stad, maar toch ver weg. In 2016 lanceerde de Antwerpse stadsbouwmeester Christian Rapp een internationale ideeenwedstrijd met de expliciete ambitie om Linkeroever tot het voorwerp van ontwerpend onderzoek te maken en om het debat over het belang van dit deel van de stad voor heel Antwerpen aan te zwengelen. De wedstrijd was een zoektocht naar Leitbilder ? visies die een beeld geven van wat de toekomst van de stad zou kunnen zijn. Linkeroever. In het boek vormt dit initiatief het uitgangspunt voor het opnieuw aan de orde stellen van de bredere vragen over de huidige stand van zaken in stedenbouw en ontwerp. Als Linkeroever een stad is die op het punt staat plaats te vinden, dan markeren dit boek en deze wedstrijd het begin van die ontwikkeling. For many of the city's inhabitants, the Antwerp Linkeroever is unknown territory. From the banks of the Scheldt, the opposite side of the river appears as a series of high-rise buildings hovering over a green strip. Although recollections of summer evenings on the beach of Sint-Anna are part of the collective memory of the city, the Linkeroever is often overlooked and forgotten. It is 'across the river' - a part of the city, yet also something separate. In 2016, Antwerp City Architect Christian Rapp launched an international ideas competition, with an explicit ambition to address the Linkeroever as an object of design research and to start the debate on the importance of this part of the city for the whole of Antwerp. The competition looked for Leitbilder - images that offer a vision on what the future of the city might be. Linkeroever. Across the River intends to extend beyond merely collecting the results of the competition. Instead, it takes this initiative as the starting point for readdressing larger questions about the state of urban development and design today. If the Linkeroever is a city about to happen, this book and the competition wish to mark the start of this journey. ‎

‎Weinig Belgische architecten hebben zo'n markant en verscheiden oeuvre nagelaten als Leon Stynen (1899-1990). Meer dan vijftig jaar lang, van de vroege jaren 1920 tot aan het einde van zijn professionele loopbaan in 1977, was hij actief als architect, stedenbouwkundige en designer. Hij was over het hele land werkzaam, met een grote voorliefde voor zijn geboortestad Antwerpen. Zijn faam dankt hij niet alleen aan zijn oeuvre, maar ook aan zijn rol in het onderwijs en aan zijn engagementen in talrijke belangenverenigingen en socio-culturele organisaties. In alle publicaties over de Belgische architectuurgeschiedenis staat Stynen vermeld als een van de toonaangevende architecten van zijn generatie. Enkele sleutelwerken van het modernisme in Belgie staan op zijn naam. De tentoonstelling 'Leon Stynen, architect' toont stukken uit het rijke archief van Stynen met iconische ontwerpen, vanaf de eerste schets tot de voltooiing. Het archiefmateriaal komt verder tot leven met eigentijdse en recente architectuurfotografie, maquettes, stukken uit privecollecties en getuigenissen van vroegere collega's, medewerkers en opdrachtgevers.
