XVIII-856 pp. + 857-1711 pp, Demi-toile bleue moderne, dos lisses, titres dorés, Deuxième édition, revue et augmentée, écrite en collaboration avec le fils ainé de l'auteur, Bertram Giles, consul britannique à Changsha, capitale de la province du Hunan. L'ouvrage a été enrichi de nouvelles définitions, des phrases pour illustrer les propos, 77 nouveaux caractères (portant le total à 10926) : au total, près de 400 pages supplémentaires en comparaison avec la première édition. L'introduction contient de nombreuses informations utiles à la compréhension de la culture chinoise : rangs officiels, noms de familles, dynasties, tables chronologies. S'ensuit la liste des 214 radicaux et son index. En outre, ce dictionnaire inclut la prononciation de 9 dialectes, dont le cantonnais, et dans 3 langues sinoxénique : le coréen, le japonais et le vietnamien. L'auteur, Herbert Giles fut officier du consulat britannique en Chine de 1867 à 1892. À son retour, il devient professeur de chinois à Cambridge, succédant à Thomas Wade. Les deux hommes sont responsables d'un nouveau système de romanisation des caractères chinois (Wade-Giles).
