‎De laatste jaren wordt het werk van de Antwerpse havenkunstenaar Eugeen Van Mieghem internationaal herontdekt door tentoonstellingen o.a. in Barcelona, Londen, New York, Parijs, Amsterdam en Berlijn.Dit is mede te danken aan auteur en conservator Erwin Joos van het Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum in Antwerpen die sinds 1982 het oeuvre bestudeert. Dit is zijn eerste boek gewijd aan de grootste Van Mieghem collectie ter wereld: het Stedelijk Prentenkabinet der Stad Antwerpen dat niet minder dan 610 werken van deze kunstenaar bezit. Van Mieghem groeit op in het hartje van de oude Antwerpse haven. In 1892 komt hij de Antwerpse Academie in contact met het werk van o.a. Van Gogh, Seurat en de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1896 werd hij echter van de academie verwijderd en gaat werken in de haven. In 1901 kende Van Mieghem heel wat succes op "La Libre Esth tique". Kort daarna huwt hij met Augustine Pautre. Rond 1900 maakt hij een indrukwekkende reeks over de Joodse landverhuizers die met de Red Star Line naar de Nieuwe Wereld vertrekken. Eind dat jaar wordt Augustine ziek. Van Mieghem zal haar stervend weergeven in een indrukwekkende reeks tekeningen en pastels. In 1912 heeft hij een eerste individuele expositie maar de ontluikende internationale belangstelling wordt door de Eerste Wereldoorlog abrupt afgebroken. In 1920 Van Mieghem benoemd tot leraar aan de Antwerpse Academie en tot aan zijn dood blijft hij kunst maken over de Antwerpse haven en haar bevolking. Als geen ander heeft hij het leven van de gewone mens, levend en werkend in een wereldhaven, getekend en geschilderd. ‎C'est par un voyage que commence les chroniques d'Erwin Teutsch, exhumées des archives de la Société d'Histoire du Val et de la Ville de Munster par Gérard Leser : le retour en catastrophe de la Bretagne vers l'Alsace en 1914. Voyage symbolique : un Alsacien, Allemand de nationalité, Français de coeur, rencontre toutes les difficultés du monde à rentrer en Alsace car considéré comme un ennemi. L'histoire de la lente destruction de la vallée de Munster sous les obus allemands et français en 1914-1915 raconté par Erwin Teutsch, pasteur alsacien, est au coeur du récit. Ce journal de bord décrit l'avancée des troupes française, puis le recul, les vagues allemandes qui progressent puis refluent dans la vallée. Il s'agit bien de l'étonnante image d'une terre qui cherche son identité. Pour Erwin Teutsch l'ennemi n'est ni d'un côté, ni de l'autre. Il est partout où les hommes tuent aveuglément et pillent sans raison. Mais le côté le plus étonnamment moderne de cet écrit du début du XXème siècle réside dans la dénonciation de la désinformation, qu'elle soit le fait des Français ou des Allemands. ‎Ces dernieres annees, l'ouvre du peintre du port anversois, Eugeen Van Mieghem, est redecouverte au niveau international par des expositions a Barcelone, Londres, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, etc. C'est entre autres grace au devouement du conservateur du Musee Eugeen Van Mieghem, Erwin Joos, qui est l'auteur de plusieurs livres au sujet de ce peintre, et qui a commence a analyser son ouvre en 1982. Voici son premier livre consacre a la plus grande collection Van Mieghem au monde: celle du Cabinet municipal d'estampes de la ville d'Anvers, qui compte pas moins de 610 ouvres de cet artiste. Van Mieghem grandit au cour du vieux port d'Anvers. Quand il entre a l'Academie en 1892, il voit des ouvres d'entre autres Van Gogh, Seurat et de Toulouse-Lautrec. En 1896, il est renvoye de l'Academie, et il commence a travailler dans le port. En 1901, il remporte beaucoup de succes lors de "La Libre Esthetique". Peu apres, il epouse Augustine Pautre. Vers 1900, il realise une impressionnante serie de dessins d'emigrants juifs qui partent vers le Nouveau Monde avec la Red Star Line. Fin 1900, Augustine tombe malade, et Van Mieghem la represente mourante dans une emouvante serie de dessins et de pastels.En 1912, une premiere exposition individuelle est organisee, mais le developpement de l'interet national est brusquement interrompu par la Premiere Guerre mondiale. ‎Saskia De Bodt, kunstcritica en docente aan de Universiteit van Utrecht, beschrijft de evoluerende perceptie van de vrouw in de Europese kunst van de 17de eeuw tot het midden van de 20ste eeuw. In deze tijdsperiode is er een verschuiving hoe de kunstenaar de vrouw afbeeld. Oorspronkelijk hoofdzakelijk in functie van de religieuze kunst, door het ontstaan van een rijkere burgerij (17de eeuw, Rubens en Rembrandt) ziet men het ontstaan van portretopdrachten, later gaat de maatschappelijk los gevochten kunstenaar de vrouw afbeelden zonder haar te verheerlijken maar haar weergeven in al de invalshoeken van het moderne leven. Aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw gaan er overal in Europa kunstenaars, onder invloed van J.F. Millet, op zoek naar de authentieke wereld van de arbeid op het platteland. Eenvoudige mensen verdienden het ook om waardig te worden weergegeven, vonden ze. Van Mieghem daarentegen was een kind van de haven - van een wereldhaven - en vond zijn inspiratie in de drukte vlak voor zijn deur. Zijn unieke oeuvre legt op beklijvende wijze getuigenis af van het leven van heel gewone mensen en dus vrouwen van allerlei slag. Geen kunst meer enkel voor de elite maar kunst over het leven van elke dag. Erwin Joos schrijft over het leven van Eugeen Van Mieghem en situeert de afgebeelde werken van Van Mieghem en de 70 gekozen illustraties. Heel belangrijk is de reeks werken die van Van Mieghem maakte over zijn vrouw Augustine. Hier zijn raakpunten/invloeden van/met Rembrandt en Munch.‎

‎In recent years, the work of the Antwerp harbour artist Eugeen Van Mieghem is being rediscovered through expositions in e.g. Barcelona, London, New York, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. This is particularly due to the author and curator of the Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum in Antwerp, Erwin Joos, who is studying the oeuvre since 1982. This is his first book describing the largest Van Mieghem collection in the world which is located in the Municipal Print Room of the City of Antwerp counting no less than 610 works of the artist. Van Mieghem grows up in the centre of the old Antwerp harbour. In 1892, when attending the Antwerp Academy, he sees works of e.g. Van Gogh, Seurat and de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1896, he is dismissed from the Academy and works here and there in the harbour. In 1901, he is very successful at "La Libre Esthetique". Soon after that, he marries Augustine Pautre. Around 1900, he paints an impressive series about the Jewish emigrants who leave for the New World with the Red Star Line. At the end of that year, Augustine falls ill and Van Mieghem represents her when she is dying in an impressive series of drawings and pastels. In 1912 his first individual exposition is being organised, but the burgeoning international interest is suddenly broken off by the World War I. In 1920, Van Mieghem is appointed professor at the Antwerp Academy, and until his death, he continues his artistic activities in the context of the Antwerp harbour and its population. As no other he draws and paints the life of the man in the street, living and working in a world harbour.‎

In 1920 Van Mieghem benoemd tot leraar aan de Antwerpse Academie en tot aan zijn dood blijft hij kunst maken over de Antwerpse haven en haar bevolking. Als geen ander heeft hij het leven van de gewone mens, levend en werkend in een wereldhaven, getekend en geschilderd.‎
