Marc Bloch a donné à l'école historique française une renommée mondiale. Membre d'un réseau de résistants (MUR), il fut fusillé par la Gestapo le 16 juin 1944 dans un champ au Nord de Lyon. Apologie pour l'histoire ou Métier d'historien fut publié pour la première fois en 1949 par les soins de Lucien Febure, livre "testament" dans lequel Marc Bloch résume les exigences singulières du métier d'historien. ‎Ensemble très rare de tout ce qui a paru du premier traité (sur deux) de l'ambitieux projet élaboré par les deux médecins berlinois Iwan Bloch (1872-1922) et Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935), ce dernier étant davantage connu en raison des persécutions que lui infligèrent les Nationaux-socialistes. Pratiquant une approche basée sur le lien entre l’histoire de la culture et celle de la médecine, les deux hommes proposèrent le nouveau concept d’une science de la sexualité : Sexualwissenschaft ou "sexologie", dans la traduction française approximative. Et Bloch commença par une étude assez exhaustive de la prostitution (en tenant compte que seule la première partie du volume II fut livrée à l'impression, en raison de la mort prématurée de l'auteur) ; Hirschfeld devait donner ensuite son célèbre Die Homosexualität des Mannes und des Weibes (1914), ouvrage pionnier s'il en fut.Le propos nous paraît aujourd'hui évident, mais il était totalement novateur à l'époque de dépasser le cadre uniquement médical pour aborder le domaine de la sexualité dans son ensemble : "Une conception purement médicale de la vie sexuelle, même si elle constituera toujours le noyau de la sexologie, n’est pas suffisante pour rendre justice aux relations multiformes de la sexualité avec tous les domaines de la vie humaine. Il a enrichi l'ichthyologie d'un ouvrage minemment classique.. "Naturgeschichte auslaendischer Fische", trad. en franais par Laveaux.. Cet ouvrage magnifique, et un des plus beaux que nous possdions sur l'histoire naturelle, fait suite au prcdent ("Oekonomische Naturgeschichte der Fische.", 1781-1784), conjointement avec lequel il renferme quatre cent trente-deux planches enlumines, reprsentant les poissons de l'Europe et des autres contres du globe. Bloch n'aurait pu terminer cette belle entreprise, sans l'assistance de plusieurs princes et riches personnages, qui se chargrent des frais occasions par la gravure des planches qui ornent les six derniers volumes (cos Biographie Medicale,II,p. 287).Testo in ottimo stato.‎
