‎Het is een oude fantasie: dat wij op een dag even lles zouden kunnen vernemen wat zich in de hoofden van de anderen afspeelt. Als in een soort collectieve openbaring. Alle maskers af. Enerzijds denk ik, laten we hopen dat die fantasie nooit werkelijkheid wordt; we zouden het niet overleven. Anderzijds, misschien net wel. Eindelijk zouden al die duistere hoofden eens gelucht zijn. En zouden we vaststellen dat we dit natuurlijk wel wisten, dat wij inderdaad darkrooms zijn. Ik gebruik het woord darkroom niet zomaar. Ook dat kwam in me op bij het werk van Serneels. Jaar na jaar, jarenlang, heeft die het dagboek van zijn hoofd bijgehouden. Althans, zo kunnen we het zien. Vanzelfsprekend zijn deze schetsen, dit dagboek, niet zomaar een verslag van het zichtbare, herkenbare dagelijkse bestaan. Veeleer zie ik een kroniek van het nzichtbare dagelijkse bestaan. En ook, en vooral, zie ik hoe het onderscheid tussen die twee, het dagelijks zichtbare en het onzichtbare, dat ik hier nu zo schijnbaar vanzelfsprekend aanbreng, in deze schetsen oplost. En tegelijk verschijnt uiteraard.‎
