‎Paris / Amsterdam Simon BENARD / Pierre MORTIER 1691 Deux volumes reliés comme un seul. Une deuxième édition du «Voiage du Monde de Descartes» reliée avec un premier exemplaire de Ainsi (Amsterdam) de la «Suite du voyage du monde» Malheureusement, le premier volume MANQUE la double plaque de la Lune. Il contient les 18 gravures sur bois montrant les systèmes célestes. Le deuxième volume contient 12 gravures sur bois. Reliure d'origine plein cuir avec détails dorés au dos. (Un peu fané à la colonne vertébrale). La reliure craque sur les charnières avec quelques entailles, mais tient toujours ensemble. À l'intérieur, les livres sont propres et bien rangés avec un peu d'assombrissement et quelques taches de rousseur isolées seulement. Quelques notes encrées contemporaines sur le tableau intérieur. [xiv], 308., [viii], 248. pp. 160 x 100mm. Le premier volume est rare dans les premières éditions. Au moment de la rédaction de cette description, il n'y a pas d'exemplaires de la «Suite du voyage» disponibles. Ces ouvrages ont été écrits par le Prêtre Jésuite, le Père Gabriel DANIEL (1649-1728), connu pour son activité d'historiographe et pour son Histoire de France. Il relate Voyage imaginaire autour de l'univers cartésien, composé sous forme de satire en compagnie du Père Mersenne, l'auteur combat principalement le système des tourbillons. Le débat sur la question du Vide et de la Mécanique Céleste fut l'un des plus importants de la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, et tous les scientifiques et métaphysiciens de l'époque y apportèrent leur point de vue. Daniel était opposé à la philosophie cartésienne, et ces traités visent principalement à attaquer son Traité de la lumière (publié en 1664).‎

‎Two volumes bound as one. A second edition of the "Voiage du Monde de Descartes" bound in with a First Thus (Amsterdam) copy of the "Suite du voyage du Monde". Unfortunately the First volume lacks the double plate of the Moon. It contains the 18 woodcuts showing celestial systems. The second volume contains 12 woodcuts. Original full leather binding with gilt details to the spine. (Somewhat faded to the spine). The binding is cracking to the hinges with some nicking, but is still holding together. Internally the books are clean and tidy with a little darkening and a couple of isolated foxing spots only. A couple of contemporary inked notes to the inside board. [xiv], 308., [viii], 248. pp. 160 x 100 mm (6Œ x 4 inches). The first volume is scarce in early editions. At the time of writing this description, there are no copies of the "Suite du voyage" available. These works were the written by the Jesuit Priest, Father Gabriel Daniel (1649-1728), known for his activity as a historiographer and for his History of France. It relates Imaginary journey around the Cartesian universe, composed in the form of satire in the company of Father Mersenne, the author mainly fights the system of vortices. The debate on the question of the Void and Celestial Mechanics was one of the most important of the second half of the 17th century, and all the scientists and metaphysicians of the time brought their point of view to it. Daniel was opposed to Cartesian philosophy, and these treatise are mainly aimed at attacking his Treatise on Light (Published in 1664). .‎

Il s'agit vraisemblablement d'un ajout ou d'une réparation postérieure, car la rousseur légère du titre est reproduite exactement sur la planche. Entre la page de titre et le premier chapitre est inséré un feuillet vert clair (imprimé en fac-similé) mentionnant "A Georgette et Paul Charpentier un vieux conteur à lunettes Daniel Darc". Daniel Darc est le pseudonyme de Madame ER Régnier, née Marie Serrure. Complet avec les 8 planches pleine page coloriées à la main. A l'intérieur, rousseurs légères à modérées, mais en général en très bon état, et les planches en couleur sont en très bon état. 175 pages. 280 par 215mm (11 par 8œ pouces). Les enfants mentionnés dans la dédicace, Georgette et Paul Charpentier, étaient âgés de 4 ans au moment de la dédicace et étaient les enfants de l'éditeur. Ils furent plus tard le sujet d'un célèbre tableau de Renoir.‎

‎First edition in hardback boards, with the title page reproduced on the front board. This is presumably a later addition or repair, as the light foxing to the title is replicated exactly to the board. Between the title page and the first chapter is inserted a light green leaf (printed in facsimile) mentioning "To Georgette and Paul Charpentier an old bespectacled storyteller Daniel Darc". Daniel Darc is the pseudonym of Madame ER Régnier, born Marie Serrure. Complete with the 8 full page hand coloured plates. Internally light to moderate foxing, but mostly in very good condition, and the coloured plates are in very good shape. 175 pages. 280 by 215mm (11 by 8œ inches). The children mentioned in the dedication, Georgette & Paul Charpentier were aged 4 at the time of this dedication and the children of the publisher. They were later the subject of a famous painting by Renoir. .‎

‎London 1844 Grande lithographie d'un banquet pour Daniel O'Connell. Lithographie à la craie d'un graveur et éditeur inconnu. C1844. Bien que cela ne soit pas indiqué sur l'image, il est presque certain que cette lithographie représente le banquet donné en l'honneur de Daniel O'Connell au théâtre de Covent Garden le 13 mars 1844. Cet événement a fait l'objet d'un article dans l'Illustrated London News de l'époque, qui comportait une illustration beaucoup plus petite. Un article du Times indiquait que le dîner avait été organisé "pour montrer", comme l'indiquaient les annonces, "l'admiration des Anglais pour sa défense constante et cohérente des droits et des privilèges des Irlandais, depuis plus de 40 ans". C'est une période fascinante de la politique irlandaise. ‎A large Lithograph of a banquet for Daniel O'Connell. Chalk lithograph by an unknown engraver and publisher. C1844, Although not stated on the image, this almost certainly represents the banquet given in honour of O'Connell at the Covent Garden theatre on March 13th 1844. This was reported on in the Illustrated London News of the time, which bore a much smaller illustration. An article in the Times recorded that the dinner was given "to show," as the announcements expressed it, "the admiration entertained by Englishmen for his constant and consistent advocacy of the rights and privileges of Irishmen, for more than 40 years." This was a fascinating time in Irish Politics. Following the massive rallies and gatherings in Ireland to obtain the repeal of repressive legislation, O'Connell was arrested and charged with "creating discontent and disaffection" among the Queen's subjects. The trial began in January 1844 and O'Connell was of course found guilty in February. Sentence was deferred, and O'Connell began the equivalent of a "grand progress" through England, and to Westminster, where he presented a bill to Parliament. In May (after this banquet) he was sentenced to a year's imprisonment. The Covent Garden theatre burnt down in the 1850's. Some pencil notes to the rear. A little marginal nicking to the corners and small closed tear. Single pin hole to the side. 280 by 410mm (11 by 16Œ inches). .‎

‎Barcelona Hermenegildo Miralles 1894 Un bel exemplaire de la première édition de cet ouvrage sur la tauromachie. Il a été restauré à un moment donné, avec un nouveau dos en tissu. Les bords des couvertures sont frottés et la surface de l'image est légèrement abîmée. Les bords de plusieurs pages initiales ont été réparés avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage, et certaines des protections en tissu au recto sont plissées. Les feuilles sont un peu manipulées et portent quelques marques. Il s'agit d'un des exemplaires avec une lithographie en guise de couverture (collée à la couverture cartonnée) plutôt qu'en tissu. Tous les exemplaires que nous avons pu trouver en ligne mentionnent 27 lithographies. La 28e mentionnée dans le titre semble être la couverture. Cet exemplaire est complet des 4 pages de partitions avec des illustrations en couleur et des bordures. Les uvres sont de Daniel Perea (1836-1909), illustrateur et directeur artistique de la célèbre revue taurine "La Lidia". Chaque lithographie est accompagnée d'un feuillet avec des textes explicatifs en espagnol, anglais et français. 270 x 360 mm.‎

‎A nice copy of the first edition of this bull fighting work. It has been restored at some point, with a new cloth spine. Rubbing to the edges of the covers with slight loss to the surface image. Several of the initial pages have had their edges repaired with archival tape, and some of the tissue guards to the front are creased. Leaves are a little handled, with some marking to them. This is one of the copies with a lithograph as a front board (pasted down to the hardback) rather than cloth. Every copy we can find online lists 27 lithographs. The 28th mentioned in the title seems to be the cover. This copy is complete with the 4 pages with scores with coloured illustrations and borders. The artworks are by Daniel Perea (1836-1909), illustrator and the artistic director of the famous bullfighting magazine "La Lidia." Each lithograph is accompanied by a sheet with explanatory texts in Spanish, English and French. 270 by 360mm (10Ÿ by 14Œ inches). ,‎

In James' own words "a provocative analysis of the history of relations between Mexico and the United States on all levels - diplomatic, military, economic, and social - considered in terms of Mexico's developing nationalism and America's attitudes to it". 472 pp. 220 x 150 mm (8Ÿ x 6 inches). Dust jacket has some light bumping and a very small nick to the top edge on the front. Inside the book is in a very good / fine condition. Freelance American journalist, Daniel James (b. 1914), covered Latin America during the Cold War years. His writings reflect two themes: 1) that the region had become a primary target for Soviet aggression against interests of the United States; and 2) that American policies had failed to reflect the importance of the region to the United States. The author of hundreds of columns, articles and at least four books on these topics, including: "Red design for the Americas: Guatemala prelude" (1954), James first went to Latin America in 1953. He described Communist activity in Guatemala and in British Guiana in articles published in that year. James continued to publish articles reflecting his favorite themes in "Harper's," "The Saturday Evening Post," and the "London Observer." Later, he prepared a study of U.S. business activities in Mexico for the United States Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (1956). From 1955 through 1967 Daniel James was a syndicated columnist for the Hearst Newspapers and SPADEA, publishing his views under the title: "Dateline Latin America." During the 1960s he published: "Cuba: the first Soviet satellite in the Americas" (1961); "Mexico and the Americas" (1963); and, "Che Guevara; A biography" (1969), the last written with the aid of diaries found when their Guevara was killed while trying to start a Communist revolution in Bolivia (1967). Subsequently, James was for four years a tourism director in Mexico City (1974-1978). After 1987 he operated the Mexico-United States Institute in Washington, D.C.‎

Né en 1880, Daniel de Losques (de son vrai nom Henri-Daniel-Casimir-Paul Thouroude), oeuvra comme dessinateur et caricaturiste dans la presse (Le Figaro, Le Rire, L’Aurore, Fantasio, Je sais tout, Excelsior, Le Matin, Le Monde illustré, Le Théâtre, Paris-Illustré), ouvrit sa propre imprimerie spécialisée dans l’affiche, et mourut pour la France en combat aérien en 1915. ‎First edition, second issue without the words "Conjugal Lewdness" in the main title. Daniel Defoe (ca. 1660-1731) published this essay under the original title of "Conjugal Lewdness or Matrimonial Whoredom" (1717) before being asked to rename it for the sake of propriety. This copy shows the cancel title mounted to a stub (as it should be!) Contemporary full calf, gold-tooled filets, fleurons on boards and coat of arms of Earl Stanley on upper board, ribbed spine with gold-tooling, inner filets in gold-tooling, all edged gilt. Boards have been repaired and the spine re-laid onto the back. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of foxing to the pages. vi, [2], 406 pp. 195 x 125mm (7Ÿ x 5 inches). Despite changing the title, Defoe's text is unchanged. In this essay "concerning the Use and Abuse of the marriage bed", Defoe deals with contraception and compares it with infanticide, "the diabolical practice of attempting to prevent childbearing by physical preparations". He also maintains that marriage should be a state of equality and companionship, and considers the fatal consequences of clandestine or forced marriages, unequal matches etc. The coat of arms with the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" are from the Earl of Derby, Edward Stanley (1799-1869), member of the Order of the Garter. Ex-libris of "G.O.M."‎

‎Robinson Crusoe Cut-Out book ‎

‎New York McLoughlin Bros. 1895 John McLoughlin was a Scottish-born coach maker who became a prominent figure in the New York publishing industry during the 19th century. He began in 1819 after moving to New York and initially worked for the Sterling Iron Company, where he developed an interest in printing. By 1828, he had established his own printing business on Tryon Row in Manhattan, focusing on publishing semi-religious tracts for children under the title McLoughlin's Books for Children. In 1840, McLoughlin partnered with wood engraver Robert H. Elton to form Elton & Co., which specialised in toy books, comic almanacs, and valentines. His son, John McLoughlin Jr., eventually took over in 1850 when both senior partners retired. The firm of McLoughlin Brothers is listed at 24 Beekman St. in the New York directories for 1858 to 1862, McLoughlin Bros. was located at 30 Beekman St., New York, between 1863 and April, 1870. Under John Jr.'s leadership, the company became known as McLoughlin Brothers and pioneered the use of colour printing technologies, including chromolithography, for children's books. This innovation made their publications visually striking and widely popular. The McLoughlin Brothers expanded their offerings to include games, puzzles, paper dolls, and other children's products. By 1870, they had opened the largest colour printing factory in the United States. Their works often featured adaptations of British stories by illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. The company thrived until it was sold to Milton Bradley in 1920. Despite this transition, the McLoughlin imprint continued to produce children's books into the early 20th century.‎

‎First edition thus. An uncommon work, in very nice condition. stiff card covers, cut into the shape of the image of Crusoe to the front board. Bright lithographic printing. There is some creasing to the top of his umbrella, and some rubbing to the spine with splitting to the bottom edge. Overall though, a clean copy. Stapled binding. 12 pages, illustrated throughout (including the inside of the covers). Each page is illustrated. Six of the pages are in full colour with a large, bright lithograph to each page. The other six are in black and white with smaller line engravings. The non lithographed pages are a little darkened. Overall a nice copy. 32cm x 16cm. .‎
