Ce court traité d'une grande valeur scientifique et médicale, traite des maladies et des traitements de l'oreille. L'auteur, le premier à la suite de Valsalva au début du XVIIIe s, distingue bien trois parties de l'oreille (externe, interne et moyenne). Il est le premier à conseiller la myringotomie pour les infections de l'oreille moyenne. Sa méthode diagnostique repose sur l'examen au spéculum à la lumière solaire et sa thérapeutique consiste en lavage du conduit, cautérisation au nitrate d'argent et au chlorure de zinc. Saunders (1773-1810) étudia à l'hôpital St. Thomas de Londres sous la direction d'Astley Cooper. Il acquit la célébrité pour ses opérations de la cataracte.
