Latin text of Cicero only, no preface, notes, translation or commentary) (Condition: Vellum a bit rubbed and soiled) (Note: This collection of philosophical works of the Roman politician and orator Marcus Tullius Cicero, 106-43 BC, the De Officiis, Cato Major, Laelius, Paradoxa and the Somnium must have seen, ever since it first appeared in 1469, hundreds of editions. Of these five texts the first one, on the Offices, was the most important and the most popular. The editio princeps of the Offices was published in 1465. The excellent Heusingerii-edition of the Offices dates from 1783, 'without which no critical student can fully comprehend this treatise of Cicero. It may be called the joint production of Grandfather, Father and Son (Heusingeri). (...) I give this edition a ready and hearty recommendation to every classical collector'. (Dibdin) The German 'Schulmann' and local historian Johann Michael Heusinger, 1690-1751, was rector of several Gymnasia, in Laubach, from 1730 in Gotha and from 1738 in Eisenach. His edition of Cicero of the Offices has 'noch jetzt ihre Brauchbarkeit nicht eingebüßt. Als guter Beobachter des Sprachgebrauchs hat er im Lateinischen mehrere Sprachgesetze ausgestellt, die sich als richtig bewährt haben; als Kritiker war er besonnen, so daß ihm manche sichere Verbesserung verderbter Stellen verdankt wird'. (ADB 12, 334/335) His son, Jakob Friedrich Heusinger, 1719-1778, was also a 'Gymnasialrektor'. Johann Michael collated for the text several manuscripts and consulted late antique sources, his son consulted five more manuscripts from Wolfenbüttel, and used ancient grammarians and earlier editions. 'Der erste beschäftigte sich vorzürglich mit der Erläuterungen, Jakob Friedrich mehr mit der Critik'. (Hoffmann) However both men died before the edition was finished. The son of Jakob Friedrich, Konrad Heusinger, 1752-1820, finally edited the work of both his father and grandfather, wrote an introduction, produced an index, and published it in 1783 in Braunschweig. Konrad was also a 'Schulmann', and classical scholar. He succeeded his father at the Gymnasium of Wolfenbüttel. (ADB 12,336/37) The four remaining texts of Cicero in this collection were adopted from the third edition (1774/77) of the Opera Omnia edition of the German classical philologist and theologian Johann August Ernesti, 1707-1781. This collection on 1794 is a school text. The letter is the gothic 'textura', used for liturgical texts in the 14th & 15th century, and the example for the first typeface. The margins are ample. The first R is a huge capital; several smaller capitals have traces of gilt; the text is partly faded by wear, but readable. Printer's Olive tree device of the Stephanus family on the title page, motto: 'Noli altum sapere', short for 'Noli altum sapere, sed time', in English 'Donot be high-minded, but fear'. Small name cut out of the title, leaving a tiny hole of 2 mm x 23 mm. Printer's mark on the title skillfully handcoloured. Some old ink underlinings and annotations in the text. No flyleaves) (Note: For centuries the Roman orator, author and politician Cicero retained a central position as a school author and a model for good writing, on protestant schools and in Jesuit colleges. The period of his greatest glory was the Renaissance, when he became the object of a literary cult called Ciceronianism. Many humanists took him as an absolute model for pure Latin, and an elegant style. Petrarch modeled his own 'Epistolae Familiares' in part on Cicero's 'Epistulae ad Familiares'. Petrarch created, like Cicero, in his letters 'a kind of autobiography and a partial history of his own life and time.' Petrarca 'helped establish Cicero as a uniquely powerful stylistic model and intellectual resource'. (The Classical tradition, N.Y., 2010, p. 196) . This 1577 book on offer contains a choice of the commentaries on the 'Epistulae ad Familiares' of diverse leading scholars. It is, Stephanus tells in the preface, an accompanying volume to the edition of the 'Epistulae ad Familiares', which he published in the same year. This supplementary volume contains the commentary (scholia) on the letters by Paulus Manutius, 'locorum aliquot explicationes & emendationes' of Willem Canter, the 'emendationum rationes' of Dionysius Lambinus, an excerpt of the 'adversaria' of Adrianus Turnebus, a 'commentariolus' of Stephanus himself. The second part, 205 pages, contains the according to Stephanus very useful 'commentarius' of the Italian bishop Gerolamo Ragazzoni, or Hieronymus Ragazzonius, 1537-1592. Partly browning paper) (Note: This edition of the 'Epistulae Familiares' of Cicero was first published in Halle by Renger in 1720. It was produced by the German schoolman Leonhard Christoph Rühl, of whom next to nothing is known. He doesnot figure in ADB, or in the 4th volume of 1751 of Jöcher. He has a short lemma in Zedler's 'Grosse vollständiges Universal-Lexicon aller Wissenschaften und Künste' (col. 1753/53 of volume 23, 1742), where we are told that he is a 'der Philosophie Magister, wie auch Conrector in Aschersleben'. Zedler mentions also a number of titles. In Worldcat a number of editions of classics can be found under his name, an edition of the fables of Phaedrus (1719), the Cebetis Tabula (1727), the Breviarium of Eutropius (1724), the Catonis Disticha (1736), the Germania of Tacitus (1720). All of them have notes in German, and are meant for German schoolboys, to improve their Latin and German. This edition of the 'Epistolae Familiares' was a great success. We found editions of 1722, 1724, 1726, 1729, 1731, 1736, 1745, 1750, 1757, 1759, 1760, 1776 and 1777. There may be more. From 1736 onward they were published anonymously by the Viennese publisher Krauss. In this edition of 1761 a 'privilegium Caesareum' dated 1746, is reprinted after the title page, which continues the privilege of Krauss, 'bibliopola Viennensis', for another 10 years. Krauss was the only one who was allowed to publish this book for the next ten years within the borders of the 'Heiliges Römische Reich' (intra Sacri Romani Imperii fines). (p. *2 recto) The preface opens with the statement that the 'Epistolae Familiares' of Cicero are suited for beginners, because the Latin is easy, and they are an excellent introduction to later authors. 'Denn in selbigen ist das Latein für Anfänger am leichtesten, und sie können auch daraus nach gerade von den Römischen Antiquitäten so viel Nachricht bekommen, dass sie in andern Autoribus desto leichter avanciren können'. (p. *3 recto) The preface consists for the greater part of a short biography of Cicero. At the end (p. *8 recto) we learn that the Latin text of this edition was printed after the earlier edition of Cellarius. And: 'Die Anmerkungen gehen sowohl auf die Latinität, als Antiquitäten, welche, so viel als möglich gewesen, kurz und deutlich gefasset worden') (Provenance: In ink written on the title: 'Procuravit Fr. Fulgentius Schustaczek, Sedlecii, 1 R. 30x' This is frater Fulgentius Schustaczek, a Cisterian monk. He published in 1763 in Prague a lecture that he held on 26 March of 1763: 'Amori Dolore Probato. Seu Deo Homini Formam Servi Induto; Deo Immortali In Carne Mortali Panegyricus'. (...) In Celeberrimo Archi-Episcopali Collegio Ad S. Adalbertum humili dictione expositus'. The title tells about the author that he was 'Sacri Ordinis Cisterciensis, Antiquissimi Monasterii B(eatae) V(irginis) Mariae de Sedlecio Professo', and 'auditor', at the 'praefato Celeberrimo Collegio SS. Theologiae, & SS. Canonum'. The monastery of B(eatae) V(irginis) Mariae' is the Sedlec Abbey, a Cistercian monastery in Sedlec in Bohemia, founded in 1142. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The Abbey church was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Fulgentius was 'auditor' of theology and canon law at the Archiepiscopal College of Saint Adalbert (Kolleg St. Adalbert) at Prague. Our Cistercian monk paid for this book 1 Gulden und 30 Kreuzer. ‎The 1646 Geneva-edition of one of the most celebrated and important Cicero-editions, Gothofredus' 4 volume-edition with the notes of former commentators, especially the famous ones by Lambinus. The first edition appeared in 1588 and was reprinted several times during the 17th century. Graesse does not have the 1642 Geneva-edition, but only the Geneva-edition from 1659. The Gothofredus-edition of Cicero is considered one of the most important ones. Denys Godefroy (1549-1621) also distinguished himself as the editor of the ""Corpus Juris Civilis"". Lambinus, or Denis Lambin (1520-1572) was a famous Latin scholar. After having studied the best Latin and Greek authors, he entered the service of Cardinal de Tournon and accompanied him on visits two Italy, which, due to the contact with important scholars, enabled him to gain access to the manuscripts of the Vatican. His collation of these manuscripts helped him becoming an authority on the Latin Classics. In 1566 he issued a brilliant edition of the whole of Cicero, and by then he had won a wide reputation as a highly important editor of Latin authors. Pomponii Attici vita' by Cornelius Nepos, separately. Even the title is, apart from his own printer's mark, is an imitation of that of the Elzevier brothers. The Elzevier edition was based on the Cicero edition of Janus Gruter, Hamburg 1618. He wrote about French grammar and prosody, and translated speeches of Cicero (1726/27), his De Nature Deorum (1731) and Tusculanae Disputationes (1732). The 'Pensées de Cicéron', were first published in 1744. Voltaire observed about d'Olivet: 'Nous lui devons les traductions les plus élégantes et les plus fidèles des ouvrages philosophiques de Cicéron, enrichies de remarques judicieuses. Toutes les uvres de Cicéron imprimées par ses soins et ornées de ses remarques, sont un beau monument qui prouve que la lecture des anciens nest point abandonnée dans ce siècle. ‎The uncommon reprint of the first part of Paulus Manutius' 1554 edition of Cicero's rhetorical works (Renouard 1554.12), containing three of his most important rhetorical treatises, De Inventione, Topica and Oratoriae Partitiones, as well as the Pseudo-Ciceronian Rhetorica ad Herennium. Cicero's rhetorical works, Rhetorica ad Herennium and De Inventione in particular, played an important role in teaching of rhetoric throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Paulus Manutius was one of the most prominent Ciceronian scholars of his time, and his editions, containing numerous original textual corrections a valuable contribution to Ciceronian scholarship. ‎Edition originale collective de la traduction des Œuvres de Cicéron en français. C’est la première citée par Brunet (II, 49-50) qu’il décrit ainsi : « Cette édition, fort remarquable sous tous les rapports, mérite bien le succès qu’elle a obtenu. Le texte présente une nouvelle recension, pour laquelle l’éditeur s’est aidé des variantes d’un grand nombre de manuscrits, et des secours que la philologie lui a offerts si abondamment. Des notes latines, placées au-dessous du texte, rendent compte des motifs qui ont fait adopter de préférence telle ou telle leçon. Les traductions des ouvrages de rhétorique, presque toutes nouvelles, sont dues à M. J.- V. Le Clerc, Liez, Gaillard et Burnouf. Celles des discours ont pour auteurs MM. Burnouf, Gueroult, Naudet, Binet, Goubaux et l’abbé Auger : le travail de ce dernier a été revu par l’éditeur, qui a également revu toutes les anciennes traductions recueillies dans sa collection. Pour les lettres familières et les lettres à Atticus, on a conservé les traductions de Prévost et de Mongault ; mais celle des lettres à Quintus, à Brutus, etc., est de M. Le Clerc. Dans les ouvrages philosophiques on retrouve les traductions de Regnier Desmarais, de d’Olivet et du prés. Bouhier, ainsi qu’une partie de celles de Morabin, et les Académiques par de Castillon. M. Le Clerc a traduit les traités de la Divination et du Destin ; les Lois sont de M. Ch. de Rémusat, et le traité des Devoirs est de la traduction de Gallon-la Bastide. Tous les fragments nouvellement recueillis, et qui sont ici réunis pour la première fois, ont pour traducteur M. Le Clerc lui-même. En outre, ce savant éditeur a enrichi son édition d’un discours préliminaire, d’une Vie de Cicéron, traduite de Plutarque, et accompagnée de suppléments extraits en partie de Middleton. Dans le 30ème volume se trouvent plusieurs index, composés d’après ceux d’Ernesti. Enfin M. Le Clerc a joint partout, aux ouvrages de Cicéron, des introductions historiques, philologiques ou littéraires, et des notes critiques et explicatives d'un grand intérêt. Nous ne devons pas oublier, non plus, de citer la Notice bibliographique sur les éditions et sur les traductions françaises des Œuvres de Cicéron, par C. Breghot du Lut et A. Marie-Caroline-Ferdinande-Louise de Bourbon-Sicile, fille de Ferdinand Ier, roi des DeuxSiciles, et de Marie-Clémentine, archiduchesse d’Autriche, née à Naples le 5 novembre 1798, épousa le 17 juin 1816, Charles-Ferdinand d’Artois, duc de Berry, second fils du futur Charles x, qui fut assassiné le 13 février 1820. La duchesse de Berry, veuve à 22 ans, se consacra à l’éducation de ses deux enfants, Louise-Marie-Thérèse d’Artois et Henri-Charles-Ferdinand-Marie-Dieudonné, duc de Bordeaux, né posthume ; très courageuse, elle essaya en 1832 de fomenter en Vendée un soulèvement légitimiste qui échoua ; trahie le 7 novembre de la même année, elle fut enfermée dans la citadelle de Blaye où elle mit au monde une fille qu’elle avait eue du comte Hector Lucchesi-Palli, qu’elle avait épousé secrètement en 1831 ; remise en liberté en juin 1833, elle fut tenue à l’écart par la famille royale et se vit enlever la direction de l’éducation de son fils. Elle vécut à Venise et mourut le 17 avril 1870 au château de Brunsee en Styrie. Cette princesse, aux goûts artistiques très développés, avait d’abord constitué dans son château de Rosny, près Mantes, une luxueuse bibliothèque remarquable tant par le choix des éditions et la richesse des reliures que par l’importance des manuscrits qu’elle renfermait, puis après ses multiples déboires, elle s’était constituée un cabinet choisi de lecture des principaux romans contemporains qu’elle affectionnait particulièrement dans sa retraite autrichienne de Brunsee : Balzac, Dumas, Sue, etc. Ces volumes destinés à être lus étaient alors revêtus d’une reliure en demi-veau, classés dans les rayonnages de la bibliothèque de Brunsee et enrichis de l’ex-libris « Brunsee - A l’index – Ouvrage n° - Volume n° - Armoire – Rayon – Place. » Les tranches de ces volumes sont d’une couleur jaune tout à fait charmante. Provenance : des bibliothèques de la Duchesse de Berry (armes frappées au centre des plats) - Baron Northwick (ex-libris héraldique gravé portant la devise « par ternis supar ».
