‎First printing of German theolog Christoph Matthäus Pfaff's publication of a Leibniz letter who's intention was to prove that Leibniz regarded the Theodicy-problem as a philosophical mind-game (lusus philosophi) without any substantial content. Shortly after Leibniz's death, rumors and gossip about his religious insincerity were spread through France and Germany by the clergyman Christian Matthaeus Pfaff.He even claimed to be in possession of a letter from Leibniz in which the latter had confessed this [that it was a game of reconciling a deterministic, optimistic system with revealed religion, without real commitment or success in either] to him. Pfaff stirred up high expectations with his repeated announcement that he was on the verge of publishing the letter, but he always found some excuse not to though. (JOLLEY, The Cambridge Companion to Leibniz, P. 468)An excerpt of the letter was eventually published, which, as Pfaff states, questions Leibniz view on the Theodicy.The Theodicy, a term coined by Leibniz in his book ""Essais de Théodicée sur la bonté de Dieu, la liberté de l'homme et l'origine du mal"" which appeared in 1710 with numerous editions thereafter, was widely read, but Leibniz did not regard the book as a very full or adequate expression of his thoughts, and he seemed to have hoped that someone else would assume the burden of collecting his scattered writings after his death so as to make him better understood.‎

‎Edition originale des traductions en français par Louis Langlès de cette réunion de 3 travaux réunis en 2 parties sur Pégu, ville portuaire du sud de la Birmanie, et le Ceylan, Sri Lanka actuel (E.O. : I. Londres, 1785, II. Berlin & Stettin, 1782 et Hambourg, 1782). William Hunter (1718-1783), médecin, professeur, anatomiste et orientaliste écossais, vécut une grande partie de sa vie en Inde. Après avoir choisi de faire une maîtrise en arts à l'Université de Glasgow, qui le mènerait à une carrière religieuse, il vient à la médecine en étudiant avec William Cullen (1710-1790 ; médecin et chimiste britannique). Il commence à s'intéresser à l'anatomie au St George's Hospital de Londres, se spécialise dans l'obstétrique et arrive à établir ce domaine comme une branche à part entière et acceptée de la médecine. Après 1756, la pratique médicale de Hunter était principalement consacrée à l'obstétrique, et il était le spécialiste le plus performant dans ce domaine en Grande-Bretagne à son époque, devenant médecin de la reine Charlotte en 1762. Il est élu membre de la Royal Society en 1767 et professeur d'anatomie à la Royal Academy en 1768. Pour aider à l'enseignement de la dissection, il engage le sculpteur Agostino Carlini (vers 1718-1790; sculpteur, peintre et membre fondateur de la Royal Academy) pour faire des sculptures des écorchés d'un criminel récemment exécuté. En outre, Hunter est un collectionneur de minéraux, monnaies, instruments scientifiques, objets ethnographiques, de livres rares et d'uvres d'art en tout genre. Il a légué ses collections à l'université de Glasgow, un acte qui a inspiré l'ouverture du Hunterian Museum, le premier musée public d'Écosse, en 1807. Johann Christoph Wolf (1683-1739) est un savant, hébraïste allemand, professeur de langues orientales à Hambourg, recteur de l'académie de cette même ville et premier secrétaire d'État à Jaffanapatnam à Ceylan. Suit la traduction de lallemand en français (E.O. : Hambourg, 1782) de la description abrégée de cette île due à Adolf Eschelskroon (1736-1793), explorateur danois, marchand, consul et agent royal danois à Kiel qui vécut aux Indes orientales pendant 18 ans. Provenance : le Baron Zangiacomi (1766-1846), magistrat et un homme politique français : il est successivement pair de France, président de chambre et conseiller à la Cour de cassation, membre du Conseil des Cinq-Cents et député de la Convention nationale (ex-libris armorié gravé collé au dos du premier plat). In addition, Hunter is a collector of minerals, coins, scientific instruments, ethnographic objects, rare books and works of art of all kinds. He bequeathed his collections to the University of Glasgow, an act that inspired the opening of the Hunterian Museum, the first public museum in Scotland, in 1807. In the last years of his life, Hunter took the position of surgeon on a naval vessel before moving to the service of the India Company in Bengal. He was sent to Java as Inspector General of Hospitals, Professor and Examiner of the College of Calcutta and finally, Secretary of the Asiatic Society. Johann Christoph Wolf (1683-1739) was a German scholar, Hebraist, professor of Oriental languages in Hamburg, rector of the academy of the same city and first secretary of state in Jaffanapatnam in Ceylon. Follows the translation from German into French (E.O.: Hamburg, 1782) of the abridged description of this island due to Adolf Eschelskroon (1736-1793), Danish explorer, merchant, consul and royal Danish agent in Kiel who lived in the East Indies for 18 years. ‎Voor veel inwoners van de stad Antwerpen is Linkeroever onbekend terrein. Vanaf de oevers van de Schelde ziet de overkant van de rivier eruit als een verzameling hoge gebouwen, zwevend boven een groene strook. In 2016 lanceerde de Antwerpse stadsbouwmeester Christian Rapp een internationale ideeenwedstrijd met de expliciete ambitie om Linkeroever tot het voorwerp van ontwerpend onderzoek te maken en om het debat over het belang van dit deel van de stad voor heel Antwerpen aan te zwengelen. For many of the city's inhabitants, the Antwerp Linkeroever is unknown territory. From the banks of the Scheldt, the opposite side of the river appears as a series of high-rise buildings hovering over a green strip. Although recollections of summer evenings on the beach of Sint-Anna are part of the collective memory of the city, the Linkeroever is often overlooked and forgotten. It is 'across the river' - a part of the city, yet also something separate. In 2016, Antwerp City Architect Christian Rapp launched an international ideas competition, with an explicit ambition to address the Linkeroever as an object of design research and to start the debate on the importance of this part of the city for the whole of Antwerp. The competition looked for Leitbilder - images that offer a vision on what the future of the city might be. Linkeroever. Across the River intends to extend beyond merely collecting the results of the competition. Instead, it takes this initiative as the starting point for readdressing larger questions about the state of urban development and design today. ‎Le docteur Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland (Langensalza (Thuringe), 12 août 1762 - Berlin, 25 août 1836) est le premier médecin du roi de Prusse Frédéric III et de la reine Louise de Prusse. Il est reconnu comme le précurseur le plus célèbre de la médecine préventive anti-vieillissement. À travers son livre Makrobiotik oder die Kunst, das menschliche Leben zu verlängern (lArt de prolonger la vie par la macrobiotique), paru en 1796, Hufeland devient très connu à son époque. ‎Texte dans un fin encadrement bleu et noir. La lithographie en couleurs du frontispice représente un enfant blond, un ermite et une bergère dans un paysage d e montagne situant bien le cadre tout à la fois bucolique, sentimental et religieux de ce conte. Nombreuses gravures sur bois in et hors-texte de Rudolf GEISSLER. Christoph von Schmid, le célèbre chanoine Schmid (1768-1854), auteur des fameux Contes de Schmid, est le créateur de la littérature pour enfants en langue allemande. Ses œuvres ont connu une immense diffusion, notamment en langue française, et ont été imitées et transposées, sans compter que de peu scrupuleux éditeurs lui ont attribué une foule d'ouvrages d'autres auteurs (crédité de 2500 notices au total dans le catalogue de la BNF !). Comment le jeune Henri apprit à connaître Dieu. Histoire morale et amusante pour les enfants fut son premier ouvrage traduit en français (Blanchard, 1820). Il a connu de nombreuses éditions dans diverses traductions pendant tout le XIXème siècle (la dernière étant Henri d'Eichenfels, chez Ardant à Limoges en 1891). La première édition allemande (chez Krüll) date de 1817. La première édition chez Manz date de 1864 et a été rééditée de nombreuses fois sous différentes formes. L'intérêt de cet exemplaire est d'avoir encore sa jaquette d'origine. De nombreux ouvrages cartonnés allemands (aussi certains français) étaient commercialisés sous une chemise protectrice imprimée en papier qui, la plupart du temps, a disparu. Texte en allemand. Sturm was one of the leading architectural theorists of his time and the present compendium covers general mathematics, arithmetic, architecture and mechanics, astronomy and geography, sundials and optics. “Leonhard Christoph Sturm (1669—1719) German mathematician and architect. He published a treatise on Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem (1694) in which he endeavoured to prove the building's Divinely inspired dimensions and proportions were the basis for Classical architecture (a notion that resurfaces every so often).
