‎This book offers an architectural report of the metamorphosis that the Vooruit art center has known during the last ten years. Spurred on by a growing need for the arts center to physically adapt and make new connections with its surroundings and its users, the iconic monument underwent a transformation from a cultural home to an urban platform. The book further elaborates on the vision of the architect and how he wants to build on this art and architecture treasure from the past in a unique and challenging way. The social importance and responsibilities of the arts center in the city are deepened in a debate, in which sustainability and greening are also given a place. In addition, art in the public space becomes an important theme in the publication. Three artists give their reflection on the new architecture through interviews. ‎First printing of German theolog Christoph Matthäus Pfaff's publication of a Leibniz letter who's intention was to prove that Leibniz regarded the Theodicy-problem as a philosophical mind-game (lusus philosophi) without any substantial content. Shortly after Leibniz's death, rumors and gossip about his religious insincerity were spread through France and Germany by the clergyman Christian Matthaeus Pfaff.He even claimed to be in possession of a letter from Leibniz in which the latter had confessed this [that it was a game of reconciling a deterministic, optimistic system with revealed religion, without real commitment or success in either] to him. Pfaff stirred up high expectations with his repeated announcement that he was on the verge of publishing the letter, but he always found some excuse not to though. (JOLLEY, The Cambridge Companion to Leibniz, P. 468)An excerpt of the letter was eventually published, which, as Pfaff states, questions Leibniz view on the Theodicy.The Theodicy, a term coined by Leibniz in his book ""Essais de Théodicée sur la bonté de Dieu, la liberté de l'homme et l'origine du mal"" which appeared in 1710 with numerous editions thereafter, was widely read, but Leibniz did not regard the book as a very full or adequate expression of his thoughts, and he seemed to have hoped that someone else would assume the burden of collecting his scattered writings after his death so as to make him better understood.‎

‎Edition originale des traductions en français par Louis Langlès de cette réunion de 3 travaux réunis en 2 parties sur Pégu, ville portuaire du sud de la Birmanie, et le Ceylan, Sri Lanka actuel (E.O. : I. Londres, 1785, II. Berlin & Stettin, 1782 et Hambourg, 1782). William Hunter (1718-1783), médecin, professeur, anatomiste et orientaliste écossais, vécut une grande partie de sa vie en Inde. Après avoir choisi de faire une maîtrise en arts à l'Université de Glasgow, qui le mènerait à une carrière religieuse, il vient à la médecine en étudiant avec William Cullen (1710-1790 ; médecin et chimiste britannique). Il commence à s'intéresser à l'anatomie au St George's Hospital de Londres, se spécialise dans l'obstétrique et arrive à établir ce domaine comme une branche à part entière et acceptée de la médecine. Après 1756, la pratique médicale de Hunter était principalement consacrée à l'obstétrique, et il était le spécialiste le plus performant dans ce domaine en Grande-Bretagne à son époque, devenant médecin de la reine Charlotte en 1762. Il est élu membre de la Royal Society en 1767 et professeur d'anatomie à la Royal Academy en 1768. En outre, Hunter est un collectionneur de minéraux, monnaies, instruments scientifiques, objets ethnographiques, de livres rares et d'uvres d'art en tout genre. Il a légué ses collections à l'université de Glasgow, un acte qui a inspiré l'ouverture du Hunterian Museum, le premier musée public d'Écosse, en 1807. In the last years of his life, Hunter took the position of surgeon on a naval vessel before moving to the service of the India Company in Bengal. Follows the translation from German into French (E.O.: Hamburg, 1782) of the abridged description of this island due to Adolf Eschelskroon (1736-1793), Danish explorer, merchant, consul and royal Danish agent in Kiel who lived in the East Indies for 18 years. Collecting a global series of case studies on premodern societies, this volume proposes new approaches to research into premodern models of world-order and their effects. With its focus on the period between c. 1300 and 1600, it seeks to open up fresh perspectives for premodern Global History and the analysis of phenomena of transcultural contact and exchange. Focussing on religious, political, and geographical ideas and models, the contributions explore whether and how large-scale concepts influenced or even determined concrete actions. The examples include socio-religious concepts (Christianity, terra paganorum, d?r al-?arb), political concepts (empire) and geographical notions. ‎Voor veel inwoners van de stad Antwerpen is Linkeroever onbekend terrein. Vanaf de oevers van de Schelde ziet de overkant van de rivier eruit als een verzameling hoge gebouwen, zwevend boven een groene strook. Hoewel herinneringen aan zomeravonden op het Sint-Annastrand deel uitmaken van het collectieve geheugen van de stad, wordt Linkeroever vaak over het hoofd gezien en vergeten. In 2016 lanceerde de Antwerpse stadsbouwmeester Christian Rapp een internationale ideeenwedstrijd met de expliciete ambitie om Linkeroever tot het voorwerp van ontwerpend onderzoek te maken en om het debat over het belang van dit deel van de stad voor heel Antwerpen aan te zwengelen. From the banks of the Scheldt, the opposite side of the river appears as a series of high-rise buildings hovering over a green strip. Although recollections of summer evenings on the beach of Sint-Anna are part of the collective memory of the city, the Linkeroever is often overlooked and forgotten. It is 'across the river' - a part of the city, yet also something separate. In 2016, Antwerp City Architect Christian Rapp launched an international ideas competition, with an explicit ambition to address the Linkeroever as an object of design research and to start the debate on the importance of this part of the city for the whole of Antwerp.
