‎Scarce copy signed by Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935). British academic and Japanologist, Chamberlain his famous forthis informal and popular one-volume encyclopaedia "Things Japanese". Professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University since 1886, he was a friend of Lafcadio Hearn. Good condition (title page a bit rubbed, no jacket, otherwise a good copy).‎

‎First printing of Chamberlain, Segré, Wiegand and Ypsilantis landmark paper in which they first presented their discovery of antiprotons. Chambelain was together with Segré in 1959 awarded the Nobel prize in physics ""for their discovery of the antiproton"".The detection of the antiproton was first achieved in the fall of 1955 by the Berkeley physicists Owen Chamberlain [et al]. Their scintillators and Cerenkov counters showed about 60 antiproton condidates, but the ultimate proof of the particle, its annihilation with an ordinary proton, was not immediatedly confirmed. (Kragh, Quantum Generations). Since 1955, the antiparticles of many other subatomic particles have been created in particle accelerator experiments. In recent years, complete atoms ofantimatter have been assembled out of antiprotons and positrons, collected in electromagnetic traps.‎

Il n'a pas la prétention de contenir les mémoires, ni de retracer la longue carrière de l'éminent homme d'Etat. Mais ce qu'il nous apporte est d'un grand prix : une série d'épisodes dramatiques et une riche galerie de portraits. Le ton de parfaite simplicité et de sincérité convaincante avec lequel ils nous sont présentés fait mieux comprendre et apprécier le caractère d'un grand Anglais, la conscience qu'il apporte à son travail, la variété de sa culture, la fraîcheur de ses sentiments. Sur la période culminante de sa vie politique, les années passées au Foreign Office, sir Austen Chamberlain n'insiste pas.
