‎Souvenirs historiques de George BALDWIN, (décédé en 1818), écrivain et voyageur, est un mémoire proposant de faire du commerce entre les Indes, alors largement sous domination anglaise, l’Égypte, en passant par la mer rouge et l’Angleterre. Il n'y accomplit son projet qu'en 1773, lorsqu'il se trouvait au Caire à l'époque de Méhemed Bey, qui lui dit : « Si vous amenez les navires indiens à Suez, je poserai un aqueduc depuis le du Nil à Suez, et tu boiras de l'eau du Nil. », le but étant d’installer la puissance anglaise dans la région. En seconde partie, un essai sur le traitement de la peste par l’utilisation d’huile d’olive et la troisième partie nous donne une description de la bataille d’Aboukir Historical memories of George BALDWIN, (died in 1818), mystical writer, is a memoir proposing trade between the Indies, then largely under English domination, Egypt, via the Red Sea and England. ‎"Baldwin était membre de l'équipe du laboratoire de physique appliquée (APL) de l'université Johns Hopkins qui a mis au point et supervisé la mise en service de la « fusée à durée variable » (VT) pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ces fusées de proximité, utilisées dans l'artillerie antiaérienne et antipersonnel, pouvaient détecter la présence de la cible et faire détonner l'explosif de l'obus à la distance optimale de celle-ci. Pendant les campagnes maritimes dans le Pacifique, les fusées VT ont amélioré la probabilité de tuer de chaque obus tiré contre les avions attaquants. Sur le théâtre européen, elles ont contribué à la défaite des bombes volantes allemandes V-1. Sur les deux théâtres, elles ont été utilisées avec un effet dévastateur pour tuer les troupes au sol en produisant des éclats d'obus à une altitude prédéterminée au-dessus des forces ennemies. Tout au long de la guerre, ni les Allemands ni les Japonais ne sont parvenus à comprendre la nature de ce dispositif terriblement efficace. Cet ouvrage intéressant et bien écrit sur un projet passionnant, est aussi une célébration du travail de l'équipe APL. Il deviendra vraisemblablement l'étude de base sur les fusées à durée variable. Baldwin nous fournit également un aperçu des efforts d'une démocratie mobilisée pour la guerre, et ses commentaires sur la recherche et le développement allemands (totalitaires) et américains (démocratiques) méritent d'être approfondis.
