Toutes les pages sont décorées d'encadrements en camaïeu par Eugène Courboin, eaux-fortes dans le texte gravées par Manesse d'après les dessins d'Eugène Courboin. Reliure de l'époque plein maroquin violine, dos à deux nerfs, plats décorés d'une guirlande de fleurs oranges et feuillage de houx, décor mosaïqué au centre du premier plat avec rehauts de motifs au fer à dorer avec la devise dorée AMOR A -MORT (avec serpents argentés, anges souffleurs de trompettes, le tout surmonté par une tête de mort en majesté cernée de rayons d'or), avec feuillages. Dos mosaïqué de fleurs de lis avec titre doré au centre. Encadrement intérieur mosaïqué de fleurettes rouges et feuillage doré, doublures et gardes de tabis gris, filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées. Etui bordé. Reliure signée CH. ‎Tirage à 160 exemplaires pour les membres de la Société des Bibliophiles Contemporains. Celui-ci imprimé pour Monsieur Angelo Mariani. Les encadrements par Eugène Courboin sont d'une inventivité et d'une imagination qui annoncent le Symbolisme et l'Art nouveau. Les eaux-fortes insérées dans les pages (différentes tailles) apportent un aspect esthétique supplémentaire à l'ensemble. Ce livre peu connu des bibliophiles, d'un tirage rare, mérite cependant toute leur considération. L’Abbesse de Castro est la plus connue des Chroniques italiennes de Stendhal et constitue un condensé particulièrement riche de l’écriture stendhalienne. L’écriture de cette chronique est contemporaine de celle de La Chartreuse de Parme : la découverte en 1833 de manuscrits italiens dans les bibliothèques ou chez de riches particuliers fournit la première impulsion à l’imagination de l’auteur, qui ne se démentira jamais jusqu’à sa mort prématurée. Stendhal s’empare de ce matériau et se l’approprie, tant et si bien que la majeure partie de L’Abbesse de Castro n’est en rien une traduction, mais bien une invention. Cette chronique se présente comme une histoire d’amour impossible entre Hélène, élevée au couvent de Castro, riche héritière d’une puissante famille des environs de Rome, et Jules, fils de brigand, et pauvre parmi les pauvres. Leur différence sociale, la religion, une sourde fatalité : tout s’oppose à leur union et concourt à leur perte. Histoire effrénée d’amour, de violence et de mort dans l’Italie du XVIe siècle, L’Abbesse de Castro revisite les grands mythes amoureux de la littérature. Il s'agit du deuxième ouvrage publié par les soins d'Octave Uzanne pour les membres de la jeune société des Bibliophiles contemporains, née à peine un an auparavant (novembre 1889). Octave Uzanne en est le maître d'œuvre. Il emploie ici le talent d'Eugène Courboin qui participera à d'autres publications bibliophiliques pour le Prince des Bibliophiles. Provenance : de la bibliothèque Angelo Mariani relié pour lui et imprimé à son nom. Angelo Mariani (1838-1914) fut l'inventeur et le propagateur du vin tonique à la coca, dit vin Mariani. Il fut l'ami intime d'Octave Uzanne et de son frère Joseph qui fut son secrétaire et le directeur des Figures Mariani (biographies de personnolités) recueillies entre 1894 et 1914 (puis avec le fils de Mariani de 1914 à 1925). Mariani fut également mécène et bibliophile. Splendide exemplaire relié en maroquin mosaïqué richement décoré pour Monsieur Angelo Mariani, ami de l'auteur et célèbre inventeur et propagateur du vin à la coca dit Vin Mariani. Un des plus beaux exemplaires qu'on puisse imaginer pour cet ouvrage.‎

‎The scarce first edition of Peano's first major publication, his first book, the work that brought him international fame, and one of the most important calculus texts since the time of Euler and Cauchy.The present book, which has a somewhat strange history, contributing to its scarcity, is considered a constitutional work of the science of infinitesimal calculus. In 1899 it was translated into German, and in 1903 into Russian.The famous Italian mathematician, logical philosopher, pioneer of symbolic logic, and a founder of mathematical logic and set theory, Giuseppe Peano (1858 -1932), studied mathematics at the University of Turin, where he was employed just after graduating (1880), and where he stayed almost all of his life, devoting his life to mathematics. After having graduated with honours, he was employed to assist first Enrico D'Ovidio, and then the renowned Angelo Genocchi, who possessed the chair of Infinitesimal calculus. At this time, Genocchi's health was declining, and the teaching of the infinitesimal calculus course was handed over to Peano already in 1882. In 1880 Peano had published his first paper, and the following year he published another three" in 1884 he published his first book, the foundational ""Calculus and Principles of Integral Calculus"", which constitutes one of ""the most important works on the development of the general theory of functions since the work of the French mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy (1789-1857)"". Britt.)As is evident from the title-page, the work was based on Genocchi's lectures on calculus"" however, the book turned out to be much more than, and in fact something completely different from, that. Peano stands as the editor of the work, but in fact most of the book is written by Peano himself. Apparently, Genocchi had given his approval to the publication of an edited version of his lectures, but when he saw the final result, he regretted the fact that it had appeared under his name. Genocchi stated in a letter that ""... the volume contains important additions, some modifications, and various annotations, which are placed first. So that nothing will be attributed to me which is not mine, I must declare that I have had no part in the compilation of the aforementioned book and that everything is due to that outstanding young man Dr Giuseppe Peano ..."".Peano assumed full responsibility for the work and also recognised it as his own. He later saw the importance that this book has had on the development of the science of infinitesimal calculus. ""In 1915 he (Peano) printed a list of his writings, adding: ""My works refer especially to infinitesimal calculus, and they have not been entirely useless, seeing that, in the judgment of competent persons, they contributed to the constitution of this science as we have it today."" This ""judgment of competent persons"" refers in part to the ""Encyclopädie der mathematischen Wissenschaften"", in which Alfred Pringsheim lists two of Peano's books among nineteen important calculus texts since the time of Euler and Cauchy. The first of these books was Peano's first major publication and is something of an oddity in the history of mathematics, since the title page gives the author as Angelo Genocchi, not Peano: ""Angelo Genocchi, Calcolo differenziale e principia de calcolo integrale, publicato con aggiunte dal Dr. Guiseppe Peano."" The origin of the book is that Bocca Brothers wished to publish a calculus text based on Genocchi's lectures. Genocchi did not wish to write such a text but gave Peano permission to do so. After its publication Genocchi, thinking Peano lacked regard for him, publicly disclaimed all credit for the book, for which Peano then assumed full responsibility."" (D.S.B. Biographie résumée de l'artiste (source Wikipédia) : Angelo Di Marco, né le 10 juillet 1927 à Paris1 et mort le 21 décembre 2016 dans la même ville2, est un dessinateur de presse et de bandes dessinées français, surtout connu pour ses illustrations de faits diversréalisées pour certains grands journaux (tels que France-Soir, Radar, Détective ou encore France Dimanche). Angelo Di Marco commence d’abord à réaliser des illustrations de faits divers3 dans les années 1950. Il se forge alors une réputation d'illustrateur réaliste confirmé, parfois même qualifié d'hyperréaliste. Obtenant une certaine notoriété, il publie dans Bravo puis dans Le Parisien libéré sa première bande dessinée : Capitaine Ardent. Puis il crée en 1960 Ivanhoé dans Télé 7 Jours suivi du Petit Shérif et des Trois Mousquetaires. À la fin des années 1960, il reprend dans Pif Gadget le personnage de Nasdine Hodja, scénarisé par Roger Lécureux, à la suite de Pierre Leguen et Roger Bastard. À partir du n° 1257 (Pif Gadget n° 19) L’insaisissable prend la mouche 20 planches du 5 juillet 1969 au n° 1407 (Pif Gadget n° 169), La pastèque creuse 20 planches de mai 1972. Ce sont les aventures picaresques d'un Robin des bois oriental, qui se joue des califes et autres pachas, avec beaucoup de ruses et de tours divers. Il dessina 16 récits complets et mena cette belle série, née en 1946 dans Vaillant, à son terme... Il est surtout connu pour ses unes de l'hebdomadaire de faits divers Détective. Elles étaient affichées dans les kiosques à journaux pour annoncer les nouveaux numéros, et il y dessinait, avec son style très réaliste, l'ultime moment avant le crime : « La nature même de mes dessins protège la victime », déclara-t-il avec humour « puisque j’arrête le geste du meurtrier juste avant qu’il ne se produise. La victime reste ainsi sauve pour la postérité ». En 1959, un de ses dessins, fait et refait dans ses moindres détails avec un témoin, la voisine de palier de la victime, constitue même un remarquable portrait-robot et permet à la police d'identifier le meurtrier4. Dans les années 1990, il poursuit sa carrière avec Arthur et Stéphane, Yankee et l'adaptation de la série télévisée K 2000. Il publie également des bandes dessinées érotiques, sous le pseudonyme d'Arcor5, dans Bédéadult' tels que Dr. Sex et Pot Bouille.‎

Saut de pagination de 336 à 341, quelques erreurs de pagination, signature des cahiers continue entre les deux ouvrages. Seconde édition des oeuvres complètes, après celle de Francfort en 1647. Le frontispice de l'édition de 1647 est de Sebastian Furck (c.1589-1666) et a servi de modèle au nôtre, reproduisant fidèlement le dessin. L'ouvrage parle de médecine spagyrique, à cheval entre médecine, chimie et principes d'alchimie. L'édition contient quelques bois gravés. Le second texte est absent de l'édition de 1647. Il fut publié en 1649. Angelo Sala (1576-1637) est un médecin et chimiste Italien, originaire de Vicence. Il passa par la Suisse (Genève) vers 1609, la Hollande entre 1613 et 1617, l'Allemagne (Hambourg) entre 1620 et 1625, fut médecin du duc de Mecklembourg-Güstrow et fut, semble-t-il, reconnu de ses pairs comme Boerhaave. Il meurt à Bützow en Allemagne le 2 octobre 1637, malgré certaines sources qui le disent encore vivant en 1639. Ferguson nous dit : « He was an able physician and an excellent chemist, an admirer and to some extent a follower of Paracelsus ».
