‎First edition of Lieutenant A. W. Greely's first short account of the fatal Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (Also known as the Greely expedition). The present account is presented as a commentary to the accompanying map. A more extensive account was published in 1886 (Three Years of Arctic Service) and the full official account was published in 1888 (Report on the Proceedings of the United States Expedition to Lady Franklin Bay, Grinnell Land)The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881-1884 to Lady Franklin Bay in the Canadian Arctic was led by Lieutenant Adolphus Greely and its purpose was to establish a meteorological-observation station as part of the First International Polar Year, and to collect astronomical and magnetic data. During the expedition, two members of the crew reached a new Farthest North record, but of the original 25 men, only seven survived to return.""The United States expedition during the First International Polar Year, based at Fort Conger, Lady Franklin Bay, about 81°45' N, on the east coast of Ellesmere Island, explored the north coast of Greenland from Cape Bryant to Cape Washington, about 82°30'-83°30"" N, the interior and west coast of Grinnell Land (northern Ellesmere Island), and extended the maping of Hayes Sound, about 79° N, on Ellesmere. Ouvrage richement illustré d'une centaine de gravures d'après les photographies prises lors de l'expédition, suivi de seize appendices. Edition originale américaine parue la même année que l'édition anglaise (Arctic Bibliography, I, No 6118, p. 927). Volumes reliés en toile bleue d'éditeur, titre argenté et vignette polychrome sur le premier plat et le dos. Ex-libris: Noah Brooks, discrets cachets de bibliothèque dans les deux volumes. Quelques traces d'usure sur les plats, rousseurs occasionnelles à l'intérieur, une déchirure sans manque (I, p. 85), sinon exemplaire frais et de très belle présentation.‎

‎Adolphus W. Greely (1844-1935) a commandé une expédition dans la baie de Lady Franklin en 1881. Elle avait pour but de créer un réseau de stations météorologiques dans l'Arctique et de collecter des données astronomiques et magnétiques pour le compte du gouvernement américain. Après avoir exploré la côte nord du Groënland, l'expédition échoue finalement sur l'île d'Ellesmere, où elle sera secourue in-extremis en 1884, après avoir perdu 18 de ses 25 membres. Greely en tire ce récit considéré comme un classique de la littérature arctique. Langue‎

‎Première édition française de cette relation d'expédition polaire. Elle avait été commanditée en 1881 de conserve par Henry Howgate et par le gouvernement des Etats-Unis à l'occasion de la première "Année polaire internationale", pour rassembler des données astronomiques et météorologiques. Nommé commandant du Proteus, Greely (1844-1935) n'avait pas d'expérience arctique, et le voyage, qui dura de 1881 à 1884 faillit se terminer de façon tragique : les survivants (6 personnes sur un équipage de 25), secourus en juin 1884 par le Bear (un baleinier écossais), étaient presque morts de faim et de froid lors de leur récupération. Bien complet des 130 gravures et des 4 cartes. Minces lignes rouges sur les bords supérieurs des dernières feuilles, sinon bel exemplaire presque sans rousseurs. L'expédition devait se terminer tragiquement: Quelle plume saurait décrire les horreurs de notre séjour au cap Sabine?...des mois entiers au milieu des ténèbres, sans eau potable, nos misérables couches gelées contre le sol: la toiture, les parois, les roches qui nous tenaient lieu de plancher, couvertes de neige et de verglas; presque sans vêtements, sans feu, sans nourriture...‎

‎La traductrice est sans doute Loïs Reclus, soeur d'Élisée et d'Onésime, épouse de François Trigant-Géneste, qui traduisit également les ouvrages de J.-J. Hayes sur le pôle arctique. ‎
