Enfin, une place toute particulière est consacrée à la somptueuse porte de Lorenzo Ghiberti, ornée de bas-reliefs, récemment restaurée, que Michel-Ange lui-même avait baptisée « Porte du Paradis ». Le texte d’Anna Maria Giusti est d’autant mieux documenté qu’elle a dirigé cette restauration aux côtés des plus grands experts, depuis 1996.</p><p>Anna Maria Giusti, directrice historienne d’art à l’Opificio delle Pietre Dure de Florence, fait figure d'autorité dans le domaine de la restauration. ‎The motif of trompe-l'oeil, optical deception, runs through the entire history of Western art, beginning with the Greco-Roman world and the legendary contest that pitted Zeusi and Parrasius against each other. Different artistic expressions-painting in primis, but also sculpture and applied arts-have never ceased to grapple with the intriguing challenge of mimesis: Just think, among others, of the half-open cabinets of Renaissance wooden inlays, of the worktops on which scagliola and semiprecious stones arrange assortments of objects with a three-dimensional appearance, of the porcelain that disguises tureens and furnishings as vegetables, of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century ceroplastics of anatomical or botanical form. ‎Summary In the last two decades, objects have become increasingly relevant to historical studies as the primary focus of research discussing cross-cultural relations. Objects are produced, used, modified, preserved, and destroyed according to historically specific political and cultural settings, thus providing researchers with information and insights about their original background. However, they can also throw light on a large array of cross-cultural encounters when their mobility is put to the fore. Objects can move by being bought, gifted, bartered, and sold, borrowed or stolen, collected and dispersed, just as they can be modified, repaired, reshaped, repurposed, and destroyed in the process. The Mediterranean, as a barrier and as a meeting place for different polities and communities, and as the setting of conflicted experiences of cultural, political, economic, and social transformation, easily lends itself to this kind of historical analysis.
