Asia (originally published as the Journal of the American Asiatic Association) was a highly influential, popular American magazine in the 1920s and 1930s that shaped how Western readers viewed the culture, politics, and peoples of the Orient. The 1930s marked a pivotal transition for the publication, shifting its identity from an exotic travel log for wealthy elites into a serious, politically conscious journal of international affairs. Prior to 1934, the magazine acted largely as a high-end tourist and commerce guide. It heavily advertised luxury goods and steamship travel, catering to affluent Americans fascinated by Eastern history and mysticism.Everything changed in 1934 when the magazine was acquired and edited by Richard J. Walsh. Walsh repurposed the platform to focus on heavy reporting, international dynamics, and regional friction pointsespecially as military tensions began escalating across the Far East. Walsh's wife was the celebrated Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck . Together, Walsh and Buck used Asia magazine as a premier gateway to introduce authentic Asian voices to the American public.Under their guidance, the journal published literary and political works by major Asian leaders, intellectuals, and revolutionaries.Bridging Cultures: The magazine moved away from Western colonial bias, opting instead to give direct platform to regional writers discussing anti-colonialism, wartime realities, and cultural philosophy.
