‎---- EDITION ORIGINALE ---- BON EXEMPLAIRE ---- BIEN COMPLET DE SON VOLUME DE TEXTE ET DE SON VOLUME D'ATLAS ---- "Influenced by evolutionary ideas and new discoveries about heredity, French psychiatrist in the latter half of the nineteenth century developed a rigid physiologically based cncept of mental illness (in Morel's case this physiological bias was reinforced by his friendship with the great French physiologist Claude Bernard). Morel was attracted to the problem of degeneration and sought for cases of mental retardatin in heredity and infantile illness. He believed mental illness to be a result of hereditary weakness and developed a method for discovering the "stigmata of degeneration" in the insane ; these stigmata encompassed intellectual and moral as well as physical taits. Morel's theories influenced those of Lombroso and also provided topics for the naturaliste literary movement led by Emile Zola. The ATLAS of this work contains lithographic reproductions of some of the earliest photographs of the insane".
