La scène se passe dans un amphithéâtre romain. Un groupe de gladiateurs apparaît au premier plan, en vainqueurs, ils tendent leurs épées ou trident. A leur côté, un gladiateur gît, par terre, un autre baisse la tête et son épée est dirigée vers le bas en signe de défaite. Au premier plan, Spartacus, est accompagné de gladiateurs d'origine Thrace comme lui. Ils sont reconnanaissables à leur courte épée, à leur bouclier rond, à leur casque volumineux ainsi qu'à leurs jambières et la manique qui protège leur bras droit. Un rétiaire porte sur son épaule un filet de pêche et présente, en signe de victoire, sont trident.Peintre Britannique (1864-1914), il quitta l'Angleterre pour l'Australie, en 1891. Il collabora au Sydney Mail. Artiste voyageur il se rendit en Papouasie, en Nouvelle Guinée, aux Îles Salomon, aux Îles Vanuatu, en Chine... Il croqua les aborigènes d'Australie et était membre du Royal Anthropological Institute dès 1890. Ses penitures sont exposées au British Museum et au Pitt Rivers Museum.Marques et salissures en marge.
