Dessinateur humoriste, WILLETTE illustre, dans ce numéro spécial sur grand papier publié le 23 novembre 1899, l'éternelle bataille entre les Anglais et les Français... Numéro 264, 6ème année du RIRE, journal humoristique hebdomadaire "de dessins et quelques textes" (in Dico Solo, 740). Adolphe Léon WILLETTE (1857-1926) est élève de CABANEL à l'Ecole des Beaux-arts. Il collabore à de nombreux journaux, Le Rire, Le Chat Noir. Polémiste ardent, il fonde deux journaux, Le Pierrot et Le Pied de Nez, et participe avec Steinlein à la création du journal Les Humoristes en 1910. C'est un des créateurs avec Forain (antidreyfusard comme lui), Poulbot et Neumont de la République de Montmartre. Bords très légèrement frottés, quelques rousseurs éparses et reliure postérieure. Nous joignons, à notre exemplaire sur Grand Papier et tiré à 100 exemplaires numérotés, un exemplaire à grand tirage, dont la couverture se détache et présente des manques de papier.

Original dark green blind stamped buckram, with gilt design to the front board. Gilt is rather rubbed. Bumping and a touch of chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally clean, but slightly darkened with a few foxing spots. A nice, unrestored copy. 228 pages. 200 x 135 mm (7٠x 5Πinches).

London Privately Printed 1814 Bel exemplaire de cette première édition des Contes de La Fontaine en deux volumes. Il s'agit de la rare édition "Privately printed". La première édition anglaise complète, dans une belle reliure de Riviére. Édition très illustrée. 160 gravures avec environ 80 sujets en deux versions. Il ne s'agit pas de deux états, mais de deux interprétations de chaque scène. Presque toutes sont en deux versions, mais quelques unes n'ont qu'une seule version (d'où les 80 sujets environ). Reliure propre et soignée en plein cuir rouge, avec titres et décorations dorés au dos. Jolies dentelles à l'intérieur des plats, et signature de Riviére sur chaque volume. Un peu de frottement sur les bords du dos. L'intérieur est en très bon état. Il y a une légère fissure à la charnière au niveau de l'annonce du premier volume (mais elle tient toujours fermement). Sinon, l'ouvrage est en très bon état et propre, avec juste quelques rousseurs. Très bel exemplaire de cette édition rare. Frontis à chaque volume (deux versions au volume un) plue 157 gravures sur papier fin, soit 160 gravures au total. ii, 1-216, 217-460 pp. 195 par 120mm. Conforme à FirstSearch OCLC : 82208352. Nous ne pouvons identifier qu'un seul fonds de bibliothèque (Harvard) de cette première édition privée.
A beautiful copy of this first edition of La Fontaine's Tales in two volumes. This is the rare "Privately printed" edition. The first complete English edition, in a lovely Riviére binding. Extra illustrated edition. 160 engravings with approximately 80 subjects in two versions. This is not in two states ; but rather two interpretations of each scene. Almost all are in two versions, but a couple have only one version (hence the approximately 80 subjects). Clean and tidy binding in full red leather, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. Attractive dentelles to the inside boards, and signed Riviére to each volume. A little rubbing to the spine edges. Internally in very good condition. There is a touch of cracking to the hinge at the advertisement of volume one (but still holding firmly). Otherwise in lovely clean condition with just a touch of foxing. Very nice copy of this scarce edition. Frontis to each volume (two versions to volume one) plue 157 engravings on fine paper, so 160 engravings in total. ii, 1-216., 217-460 pp. 195 by 120mm (7Ÿ by 4Ÿ inches). Conforms to FirstSearch OCLC: 82208352. We can identify only one library holding (Harvard) of this first private edition. .

First edition. Old, but not contemporary full leather binding. 6 raised panels to the spine, with gilt panels and label. Bookplate to the inside board. Frontis illustration of Chichele (by M Burghers). A small ink annotation to the ffep shows that the book was purchased for 2 S. 6 d. in 1699 (12.5 pence). 8vo. First edition. Although shown by Duck as almost a Saint, and presented as a Protestant before the Reformation, for his arguments with Pope Martin, a modern view would look at Chichele as a lawyer and diplomat who protected his various prebends and livings at every chance, and who, whilst working to prevent schizm in the Church and Papacy, was nonetheless prone to personal arguments with the popes. The work is dedicated to Archbishop Thomas - this was Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time of writing. The binding is in a good clean condition. A little rubbing to the binding edges. still holding well. Internally, generally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening to the end papers. slight water damage to the edge of the last two leaves (not affecting text). Henry Chichele (1364-1443) from Northamptonshire became Archbishop of Canterbury and founded All Souls College, Oxford. Arthur Duck, was a Fellow of All Souls. 178, [xxii] pp. Expanded, first English language edition (originally published in Latin in 1617.) ESTC R236 (Wing D2430).

Double page plates, double page facsimile from original manuscript. 209, [1] pp. Bookplate of Herbert Eberhard Hering, a noted German-Brazilian bibliophile and book collector, appears on the inside front paste down. The black spine has a little nicking to the top and tail of the spine. Overall in good, clean condition though. Internally clean with a few foxing spots only. Text in English. 320 x 200 mm (12œ x 7Ÿ inches).
