Illustré d'un portrait de l'auteur en frontispice. Récit d'une captivité chez les Indiens Osage dans le Kansas, ainsi que le voyage de Hunter à travers les montagnes jusqu'à la rivière Columbia. Durant de nombreuses années, ce récit a été accusé d'être une fiction, mais Richard Drinnon, en 1972, écrit "White Savage: The case of John Dunn Hunter" où il constitue un solide dossier pour prouver l'authenticité du récit.
