Édition originale de cette biographie qui fit date lors de sa parution, à la fois par le contrepied des conclusions très positives de Samuel Rawson Gardiner sur le personnage, et par la personnalité de son auteur, qui fut un des politiciens libéraux les plus remarquables des époques victorienne et édouardienne, opposant à l'impérialisme britannique et à la Guerre des Boers, comme partisan du Home rule irlandais (il aurait affirmé en 1921 : "If I were an Irishman I should be a Sinn Feiner", ce qui est "extremely shocking" pour un gentleman anglais).Bel exemplaire.
