J'espère que vous pourrez accorder à ce très brave officier, ce qu'il désire pour sa fille. Vous m'obligerez beaucoup (...)." Guizot était, depuis le 29 octobre 1840 ministre des Affaires étrangères sous la présidence nominale du maréchal Soult, et il dirigeait personnellement toute la vie politique.
