‎Édition originale peu commune.Journaliste qui évolua d'un conservatisme bon teint à des opinions démocratiques beaucoup plus radicales, sans jamais tomber dans l'internationalisme d'un Paine, William Cobbett (1763-1835) avait reçu des propositions de Pitt le Jeune pour prendre la direction d'un journal gouvernemental, mais il préféra commencer sa carrière en publiant le périodique indépendant The Porcupine (30 octobre 1800 - 1801), où le sympathique animal était comme une allégorie de son caractère et de son action auprès des hommes publics britanniques.
