‎"7. Paris, Imprimerie Auguste Vallée, Journal L'Événement ( éditeur ) , s.d. (1867) , in-folio, (6)nn pp + 149 pp + (1)(table). Bound in contemporary red half morocco, raised gilt spine. boards covered with marbled paper, marbled endpapers, spickled edges. Very fine copy without any stains or foxing ( unusually fine). This album can take its place among the highlights of French 19th c. periodical illustrations. It was produced when the art of woodcut illustrations had reached a virtuosic climax. A few years later, at the end of the 1860's woodcuts were replaced by zincographic reproduction methods, later by photographical methods. The album is divided in 9 sections : Views from Italy ; Spain ; France ; Africa ; Russia ; England. And Portraits (with a double page plate of the Garnier opera, under construction) ; humor ( cartoons ) ; Parisians; army life. It gives a fine survey of French iconographic intrests. All the best illustrators of the period are represented (see names above). Very fine stainless copy."‎
